Don’t Call Me When Spain Wins

20 06 2006

I’ll be as brief as possible considering the montón of changes made in the last weeks.

We’ve created a new section, Technology in Spain, for all those information articles about mobile phones, Sky TV, Internet, VoIP, etc.

We revamped a number of articles with up to date information including:
Churches: English-speaking Churches in Spain
Sending/Receiving Mail and Packages in Spain
Doctors in Spain
Moving to Spain: The Move
Health Care and Medical Insurance in Spain
Teach English in Spain: The To Do List For Becoming a Teacher

We’ve also added a “how to use this site” bit to the bottom of the front page of Spain Expat. I think it required some clarification, and sure enough we’ve seen a ton of great comments in the last days. Congrats to Caj for posting, by far, the greatest breadth and depth of comments on the site in a long time.

The Cheat has dropped his latest bomb on us, see “Call Me.”

Am I being vulgar?  Maybe, but then so are all the turds disturbing the peace every six seconds in the metro, the cinema, the bar, the church, and just about everywhere else by making every corner of our universe sound like some kind of deranged call center.... Read the entire article

Now to all you World Cup fans, I must ask (being without a home team in the contest myself), who do you cheer for now that you’re here? Spain is doing awfully well…

Watch out for your neighbour’s sandaled feet while you’re squeezed into the pub and until next time, GO England, Germany, USA, Australia and the Netherlands!

Welcome to Expat Life in Spain

12 06 2006

Spain Expat is the leading independent information site specifically for expats moving to Spain or already living here. Below you’ll find all of our information articles listed according to category/topic for your convenience.

Doctor Motel

03 06 2006

This week we’ve added a brand new information article, Doctors in Spain.” Along with a massive list of English-speaking doctors in Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga, we go through the steps necessary to get your health care card, get an assigned doctor and set up a doctor’s appointment (either public or private).

Additionally, The Cheat has laid down his latest, No Tell Motel,” detailing the… well, read the following excerpt:

“Isn’t it nice to host overnight visitors from time to time?  Now that we’ve set up here in Spain and are the envy of all our friends back home they all want to come down and get a taste. It has been said many times in these pages that we all need a little touch of home, and having old friends or family volunteer to fly down at zero expense to us seems like a good deal.  Secondary to this of course, is the fact that it panders to our egos.  In between the insecurities we all feel from time to time, coupled with the occasional doubts as to the wisdom of this adventure, we like having those very same old friends and family flock down to gawk at the scenery and praise our clever new way of living.”

Enjoy that and until next week, don’t get too sunburnt - you’ll look like a tourist wink

The Volume at Spain Expat

25 05 2006

The Cheat lays another Spanorama on us; “Volume Control” talks about the “the loudest European country,” Spain. Maybe it’s not something you’ve thought about before, but Spain is, indeed, loud. Expats who want to be heard should read Volume Control now.

Spain Expat now has over 530 members reading this column by email and posting their questions and comments to our information pages. If you have a bit of advice to give the rest of us, perhaps take a look at the following recently updated pages and pass it on:

Work Visa for Spain
Visa for Spain: Spanish Student Visa, Retirement Visa, and Holiday Visas in Spain
Spain Telephone & VoIP: Calling Spain
Health Care and Medical Insurance in Spain
Spain Apartment: Renting Apartments in Spain
Teach English in Spain: A Warning for Non-EU Teachers

A note for website owners: due to the very select requirements for link exchanges with Spain Expat, we’ve set up a new directory site for all things Spain. See Spain Links - Directory of Sites and Services for Spain.

Have a good weekend!

Get Lucky Livin’ in Spain

12 05 2006

The Cheat sends us his latest: Get Lucky. I guess he got lucky recently? You can check it out now.

He also received an email as follows:

Dear The Cheat,

I am writing on behalf of the BBC from a company called IWC Media in London I’m emailing to see if it would be possible for you to post a notice asking Expats visiting your forums to contact us and write about the memories and stories they have from when they first arrived in Spain.

We are looking for mature ex-pats who remember the Cost Brava, Costa Blanca or Costa Del Sol in the days before the tourists descended.

We are developing a programme for the BBC and we are really keen to talk to people who went to Spain before they became the popular destination they are today. I am extremely interested in talking to anyone who may have made these journeys all those decades ago, or anyone that could advise me on where best I should direct my inquiry. Any information anyone might have on people who have family film or photo archive of these regions at this time would also be hugely welcomed. Many thanks in advance for your help.

Best wishes,
