Dancing in the Fountain

Posted by Dreamer

Karen McCann’s Dancing in the Fountain is a thoroughly enjoyable account of expat life in Sevilla. Be warned, however, that you will probably want to put on your dancing shoes and find a fountain of your own.

In her new book Dancing in the Fountain, Karen McCann’s engaging style and sense of humor are both refreshing and immediately evident. In fact, I find them reminiscent of British author Peter Mayle and his romps in France, but with a bit more substance.

Dancing in the Fountain recounts Karen and her husband Rich’s personal journey to Sevilla in a highly entertaining way. Current and former expats will instantly identify with many of the themes in the book, and those who have chosen to live in Spain may even have similar tales to tell.

While I have not battled snakes in Cleveland, nor eaten bull meat with Sevillanos and am nowhere near retirement age, I still very much identified with Karen’s journey. In fact, it seemed a very near parallel to my own love affair with Madrid and subsequent responses as a Californian, and I found myself forced to reflect on my own experiences and choices as an expat.

The book also poses the occasional question or provides the odd bit of advice for the future or aspiring expat. This could have been disastrous for the book (trying to be all things to all people, I mean), but I think McCann effortlessly pulls it off. Expats of all types – including the armchair ones – will find the book a pleasurable read and simply hard to put down.

Dancing in the Fountain. Karen McCann. Beachwood, Ohio: Café Society Press, 2012. 232 pages. Buy the book in Europe or buy the book in North America.
