Starting a Business in Spain

Posted by Dreamer

A well-organized look at all involved with starting a business from scratch in Spain, Starting a Business in Spain by John Howell provides food for thought for the entrepreneurial expat headed to Spain when it’s needed most – before taking the plunge.

Starting a Business in Spain blends the practicalities of a good start-up business book with the details of living in a new country – Spain in this case (the author has also written Starting a Business in France). In fact, it’s an excellent starting point for the first-time entrepreneur, or even the seasoned entrepreneur, looking to set up shop in Spain. The book gives a good overview of how to find a business idea that will work in Spain, write a business plan, gain legal permissions, work within Spain’s culture, and other relevant topics.

To judge from the amount of books printed each year, starting a business and living in Spain are two very popular dreams, and for good reason too. As I can attest, there’s something magical about living in Spain and something quite satisfying about being one’s own boss. And taking them both together, “Why should I be confined to a cubicle like I did back home?” seems to be a common enough expatriate sentiment.

Yet research is to an entrepreneur like water is to life on Earth, and a good, solid start-up business book is where any potential entrepreneur should start. (When I first decided to start my own business my sister wisely gave me the Bible-sized tome Start Your Own Business from Entrepreneur Press.) And English property lawyer John Howell seems to provide for just that – with the right dose of research, he unites two daydreams-turned-possibly-attainable-dreams into one.

For the entrepreneurial-minded expat headed to Spain, Starting a Business in Spain is perhaps ground zero for turning wistful dreams into one’s own reality.
