Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel

Posted by Dreamer

The holy book of the independent travel crowd, Vagabonding by Rolf Potts advocates that long-term world travel can be possible for anyone who puts their mind to it.

I have to give props to Rolf Potts and Vagabonding. True, I dislike his occasional pseudo-spiritual language, but for first-time travelers wanting to take a crack at wandering the world or people looking for a budget sabbatical option from their life, the book is like an initiatory rite. And I have to respect that.

Vagabonding delves into taking time off from your life for long-term world travel with a sort of anti-materialist, pilgrimage sensibility. The book provides a series of tips and resources as well as short quotes and inspirational pieces for your trip. Since it was first published in 2003, Vagabonding has gone on to become the sacred cow of the independent travel crowd.

So maybe I’ll go to travel hell for saying this, but experienced travelers can save themselves the trouble and just skip it. Reading about what to pack (or not to pack), how you should keep your sense of humor about you, and how to deal with culture shock can seem, well, rather obvious. Maybe I’ve become jaded on “independent travel,” maybe I’ve completely missed the point, or maybe I’m just sick of hearing that women should never walk alone at night, but first-time world wanderers will no doubt find it to be an essential book of travel advice and inspiration.

In fact, the book would be the perfect gift for a recent high school or college graduate who is hoping to go backpacking over the summer. In that type of context, the book is really great. But experienced travelers on a budget would do well to save their money for airfare.

Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel by Rolf Potts. New York: Villard, 2003 288 pages. Buy the book in Europe or buy the book in North America.
