I just wanted to post an update regarding prior information. I am trying to get a work permit for freelance work as an English Teacher. I went to Sevilla, rented an apartment, paid a few months in advance. Applied for and obtained my Padron. Opened a bank account. Applied for an NIE with form ex 15, stating a non-lucrative visa. Received my NIE certificate. Signed a contract with Orange for ADSL, so I would be able to do my on line lessons, for which I have a contract from a company in the states to teach their expats via Skype.

Lawbird told me via e-mail that I would not be able to get my NIE, without depositing lots of money in the bank.

My lawyer here in the states, stated oops, the non-lucrative is not the way. But there is a FREELANCER visa, which is not posted on the website for the consulate of spain, which is a ‘loophole’, further stating that a lawyer from Spain sent him a package of info. However, this info, now states that I need a business plan. I am not setting up my own company…...Can anyone shed any light on this PLEASE? My NIE is only good for 3 months. Thank you.

My questions are:

1. On my visa (“visado de investigación para residencia temporal y trabajo para investigación” or “visado para residencia con exceptuación de permiso de trabajo”) am I allowed to work part-time (e.g. as a waiter, or some other job in addition to my PhD)?

2. My wife will get “visado para residencia temporal” (visa for temporal residence) or a “visado de residencia no lucrativa” (non lucrative visa). Is my wife allowed to work in Spain on this Visa?

Hello everyone,

I have been searching and searching for definitive information with regards to obtaining a FREELANCE WORK PERMIT and not self employed to start my own company by depositing 150,000 euros! I am NOT a journalist either. I am a certified English Instructor and have been teaching for nearly 15 years. First in the late 90’s in Spain. I had a bank account, rental lease and actually worked in a school. They made promises and I gave up and returned to the states. If I would have stayed, I would have fallen under the grandfather clause and would have been able to stay…..legally.

Non-eu and from the States, I speak sufficient Spanish and Italian and do all the trinity and Cambridge exams, as well as TOEFL. Business English to even young learners and no lawyers here have a clue of how to apply. I know how to apply and have my back ground check with the hague apostille and medical certificate. I teach online and have a contract with a company here in the states for teaching their expats, as well as my own private students, online. What is it going to take to get this permit and someone that can help me get it? I am so frustrated! I want to do it legally and I want to contribute to the economy in Spain, etc. Yes, that means moving back to Europe, I lived in Italy for 6 years and wish I would have stayed! Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Many thanks for the establishment of this great website!!

I have a question related to work permit for research purposes in Spain. I will go to a Spanish University as a researcher. Wherever I look, they all say that the permit should be finalized in 45 days. I am waiting for almost two months but it is still being processed and not yet granted..Does anyone have an idea about the processing times of such work permit for research purposes in Spain? As far as I know, such kind of a work permit should not take as much time as an ordinary work permit.
Thanks in advance!!

So, my husband and I moved to Spain last February with non-lucrative visas and are getting ready to renew soon. We used an attorney here in Barcelona to initially obtain the visas after unsuccessfully trying to get all the documentation together ourselves. When we arrived, she helped us get our residence cards but turned out to be a little shady and i’m having a hard time trusting her. Basically, when we arrived, we had an address in Alicante and she insisted that we needed an address in Barcelona (where she is based) despite informing us that our visa/residence cards allow us to live anywhere in Spain. So she had us use the address of one of her “colleagues” but in order to use it, we needed to pay extra fees. I just thought the whole thing was a little unusual. Anyway, now we have these residence cards with the Barcelona address.

Fast forward to the present, we are now actually living in Barcelona but not at the address on our cards. I e-mailed the lawyer when we moved here and she said we should wait to change the address until we renew. So we didn’t do anything when we moved here. Now that it is getting close to the time we need to renew, I sent her an e-mail and she is asking for information regarding how much money we have (we had to show that initially for the non-lucrative visa) but also information we never had to provide such as credit card statements and how much money we can withdraw per day. She also wants us to show that we have private insurance (when we last spoke, she told us we didn’t need it but we did end up getting it anyway just to be safe). It just seems to me that the process for renewing a residence visa should be (1) going to the ajuntament of our neighborhood and getting the documentation showing our new address; (2) taking that information to the police station; (3) asking for a renewal and an updated address on the card. It doesn’t make sense to me that we would have to show all this financial information for a renewal when we already did that when we applied.

I guess i’m just asking if anyone has been through this process of renewing a residency visa and if anyone can shine some light on this for me? I am thinking this is something we could do ourselves without the lawyer, but if it is normal to show all of this financial information, then I guess we will just do it. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi!!
I am a EU citizen (Holland) and my husband is Canadian. We also have a daughter who has dual citizenship in bot Canada and Holland. We all went to the extranjeros office in Granada where me and my daughter immediately received residential status the same day. We had to hire a lawyer and come back for my husband. We did have all the requiered documents and the application seemed to be accepted. After a month or 2 he also received a temporary NIE. This all took place in November 2011. Now we are almost a year later and have not heard anything from extranjeros. The lawyer told us it could take a long time and we would receive a letter in the mail to come and pick up his NIE (green form). Does anyone know how long the process takes and do we actually get notified by mail when the process is finished.
Thanks!!!
