ttMadrid TEFL program for non-EU citizens—is it legit??

So there is this guy called “WorkInSpain” who has been posting all over this forum saying he represents a program that provides a legit way for Americans and other non-EU citizens to work in Spain up to 20 hours per week under a student visa.

I e-mailed him to ask for the details, and he passed my contact along to ttMadrid, a language school in Madrid, which sent me the details.

The program costs 2000 euros, and you get 4 weeks of TEFL training and 4 weeks of Spanish courses. After that, you get a year’s worth of “cultural immersion” traning. You spend 10 hours a week learning about Spanish culture… This gets you a one-year student visa, which potentially allows you to work part-time. Here’s what it says:

“As a student you then have the right to apply for permission to work. This is for a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time (20 hours is considered full time teaching hours but if you want work more than this, we will help you get private work as well). This is not an automatic right but we have yet to know of someone being rejected for this and we will help you apply for this process through our agency network once you have finished the course.”

Has anyone done this program? Is it legit? What is the quality of the TEFL course like?

The “cultural immersion” classes sound sort of like fluff classes that are just used to get you the yearlong visa… but I’d be OK with that Any input would be appreciated!!

Here is the full document they provided with details on the program: http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&pid=gmail&attid=0.1&thid=12569d93b1b910f3&mt=application/pdf&url=http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=779d249fe8&view=att&th=12569d93b1b910f3&attid=0.1&disp=attd&zw;&sig;=AHIEtbSWph7LPdW9fykrYmjyxBamKAURDA&pli=1

Teaching Through Inclusive Companies like CIEE. A rip off?

After pretty extensive research on teaching English in Spain it would seem that paying a company to do the leg work for you is the most efficient way of doing it. CIEE, the only one of it’s kind I could find, takes care of temporary housing issues, helps with visa issues, and most importantly finds you a job in Andalucia. All of this for a small fee of course which ranges from 800- 3000 dollars depending on what package deal you get. They say that there is a 700 Euro monthly stipend included for the year abroad.

While the money isn’t great is this program a good option?
Has anyone had or does anyone know someone who has had experience with this kind of service?

Are there comparable services offered for placement in Norther Spain (in Barcelona, for instance)?

Hello All,

I’m a chocolate woman expat living in Málaga, Spain, and I have run into a little problem. I can’t seem to find any black hair supply stores. I’m hoping that someone can help. Does anyone know of anyone or any location where i can find black hair products: for braiding, weaving, hair care, etc.

Thank you,

I sound like a cheapskate but…

...I’m absolutely pink lint since hubby got made redundant. I’m thinking of getting a job teaching English just to get some income rather than none. I am under no misconception that I’ll make a regular or decent income from this just a few extra pennies here and there.

The problem is, for a job that potentially pays a third world salary the courses are extortionate!

The lowest I have seen so far is 150 quid. Now I know you pay for the quality and blah blah blah but a teacher is only as good as his pupil and in that respect I’m quite good at learning off my own back.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to just pay to sit the exam and find your own learning resources? The whole idea of paying for tuition seems like a bit of a con to me. I studied for and passed my A-levels as a private candidate so I don’t really share the classroom mentality. Besides, you only learn as fast as the slowest student in the class anyway, not much point if you ask me.

Thanks in advance guys

Emma

how hard is it to acquire work with ONLY a TEFL certificate?

by the time i move to spain in the spring, i won’t have acquired any degree from the college i’m currently attending. i won’t have time to complete it. but i will have a TEFL certificate. how hard do you think it would be to gain employment with just the certificate? i speak perfect English, fluent Spanish. Is getting the certificate here in California a waste of money?

how can I make sure my TEFL certificate will be recognized in Spain?

EU member currently living in the US, planning to move to Spain next year. Thinking about taking a TEFL course and becoming certified. How do i know that the accreditation program/school I use here in California will be the corret/valid one? P.S. I have no previous teaching experience, so i want to make sure that I have the proper certifications to teach English abroad, as I will have nothing else to fall back on in terms of experience.

Hi everyone. I am graduating this august and plan to move to Madrid in September. I am currently looking for and applying to different tefl courses. So far, it seems like there is a very limited number of acredited courses. I have applied to Canterbury, EBC, and International house (which is already full for their september course).

I am wondering if anyone knows of other accredited courses that are offered in Madrid. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi

This is my first website in my search for information about teaching in Spain. I teach English to secondary children in Scotland, and am wondering if there are schools which focus on teaching English to the children of expats.

Are there specific schools? Is the salary any better for qualified teachers?

I know nothing! I have a family to support, so really need to know about prospects and salaries etc.

We haven’t settled on a specific region as yet, so I am open to all suggestions!

Thanks

WANT TO SUBSTITUTE TEACH FOR ME (MADRID), December 22nd, then January 7th-13th??

Hello, this is a pretty good offer. I am gone to my home country on December 22nd and I don’t return until the 13th of January. Ergo, I need to find a replacement for me to teach my English classes. You are looking at getting paid 300 Euros plus (around 19 hours in total). Get paid in “the black,” so straight up cheque/cash.

The classes are with majority of adults (a few adolescents), the classes are near Goya Metro (Linea 2), in the centre of Madrid. On Tuesdays and Thursdays you teach in the mornings, and then in the evenings, On Mondays and Wednesdays only one hour, Fridays no classes, and on Saturdays for 2 hours (11 am to 1 pm).

On the 22nd of December you would teach from 10 am to 12 pm, and then from 6 pm to 10 pm.

It’s guaranteed work. My boss needs a replacement for me badly. I can meet with you in person, give you the materials, and discuss what needs to be done…most likely meet at my school. I will basically plan all lessons for you…your job, SHOW UP!

This is great for people who just arrived. As well, my boss needs teachers for classes coming up in the New Year, so this is the best way to get your foot in the door in my academy!!!!!!

Hi I am inquiring about qualifications of teachers for the summer in Spain. I have a teaching certificate k-12 with special education from th US. Would I still need to take the TEFL course in order to teach in Spain over the summer? I have family studying at Nebreha and was thinking of spending the summer in Madrid and possibly teaching in a summer camp or for a private or business. Any information would be wonderful.
