THEY DON’T PAY ME. And I live in a socialist country. Anything I can do about that?

Hi all,

I work legally in Spain, teaching English, but at two different escuelas de idiomas. One of them is fabulous and the other one is ... lacking.

They pay me late every month, but up until now it’s just been one or two days. This month they’re proposing to pay twelve (12!) days late.

I have a contract with them. Legally binding, right? Is there some bureaucratic entity in this country that will make them stick to it? Specifically, I live in BCN, the language school is in L’Hospitalet, and they owe me about 300 euros in pay.

I guess the other question would be: if said bureaucratic entity did exist, would it be worth it to tramitar? Or should I just wait out the half month until I get paid?

Thanks in advance!

hi
dear expats
I have been contacted by a school in Logrono and I have got an offer for a job but it seems to be scam. they have referred me to an agent called Mr. Carlito Alejo to book my flights. in turn he asked me to pay for my flights and now I am supposed to contact a lawyer for my visa. but I feel there is something fishy here, do you have any ideas what I should do? I have already emailed the school but no answers. I called them but there was just an answering machine due to holidays probably. I called Madrid branches of Inlingua but they had no ideas either.
I searched for the manager’s facebook account and emailed him (Mr. Jean-Luc Achard) but no answers yet. so I feel very confused and desperate please give me any assistance you may

thanks

Video Activities for Teachers & Students

Hello All,

I’m writing to make you aware of a video activity library I’m working on. They follow the format of: 2-3min video clip, script and discussion questions. The idea is that students can listen, listen and read, then discuss and answer questions.

They are very simple and easy to use. Try them out!

http://www.tefl-iberia.com/resources/video-activities/

I’m updating them and adding more regularly.

Thanks,

Seeking Advice for Teaching English in Spain.

Hola Amigos

My name is Aeysha. I would be moving to Spain in March, 2013. My husband is a legal resident of Spain and I intend to join him. I am living in Pakistan and am working as an English Teacher in a renowned institution of Pakistan as an O Level Teacher. I have teaching experience of almost 10 years and I have taught to Primary, Middle School and O Level Students. Although I am not a native speaker but my communication, grammatical and teaching skills are excellent and I have good pronunciation too. I have done Masters in English Literature, PGD in Linguistics, Bachelors in Education and 10 years of teaching experience.

Please friends do let me know if I would be able to make a teaching career in Spain too??? Would it be easy for me to get job there or it would be quite hard? How many opportunities for English teachers are there in Spain? My Spanish is pretty good and I am working hard to improve it. My husband lives in Benidorm which is near Valencia and Alicante. Would there be any English Teaching opportunities there? Do I need to do extra diplomas too to get a job there? Kindly give a fruitful piece of advice. I am greatly worried about this issue. Plz do help in this regard if someone knows about it.

Best regards
Aeysha.

English teacher wanted

English teacher with TEFL or equivalent qualifications wanted for new language school in Ecija, Sevilla province. A young dynamic person is required to teach at a new 2 center language school, a car is essential to move between the schools. To start with this is a part time position, but as the school becomes more established could change to full time.

State of the English teaching industry in Spain

Hi there,

Several people involved in the English teaching industry in Spain have told me generally positive things about the current state of the industry and job prospects.

Some of them arguably have a vested interest in what they have told me (I am considering moving to Spain next year, taking a CELTA course and then searching for 2013-14 jobs), so I would be grateful if others could respond to these points and advise whether they are accurate. Here is a summary of what I’ve been told:

- Despite Spain’s economic woes, the English teaching sector is doing very well, although some regions where schools have relied on business classes (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao for example) have noticed the effects of a reduction in some companies’ training budgets.

- In other parts of the country (where main clients are children, young people and adults) business is still very strong as parents are reluctant to cut back on their kids’ education and young adults realise they won’t get a job straight away so they take up English to boost their CVs.

- However, the recession meant that last year many English teachers stayed put in the schools where they were working, instead of moving around, meaning fewer job opportunities were being advertised.

- Many people in Ireland and the UK are retraining, and trying their hand at English teaching in Spain, meaning demand for teaching jobs is relatively high.

- People generally find English teaching work in June for the summer months and find work in about September for the following academic year.

- Many people who complete a four-week CELTA course in Barcelona find English teaching work at the end of the course.

I would appreciate any feedback from people in the know about whether the above points are accurate. (As an aside I have an EU passport, am a native English speaker, and have a reasonable level of conversational Spanish.)

Muchas gracias!

Desperate for some help please!!

Hello,

I am a qualified TESOL teacher and myself and family have decided to uproot and move to Spain (my parent’s are in Mula, Murcia region).

I am looking at either buying a language school or starting up my own. We have viewed about 4 small schools so far but none of them are quite right for one reason or another.

My question is, if I set up my own school, where would be the best place to choose and how would I even go about getting accredited?

I know that it can be pretty tough at the moment to get a mortgage in Spain, but I wondered if a business mortgage would be a different story.

We would prefer not to be living in a big city, but appreciate that being near a university would be advantageous. Our ideal area would be Andalusia.

I would appreciate any advice please, and if anyone knows of any schools for sale, I would be interested to know.

Thank you in advance.

Shell Bell

Can’t go autonomo!

I’m trying to build up a self employment business here but it’s hard. It’s difficult to earn enough to pay your rent food, utilities and also the 255 euros for social security +tax etc. as a self employed teacher of English. Partly because the 3 summer months I’ve no income.
So I’m still under the table after 20 months here. Spanish people in my area know I do teaching for cash in hand. So I sometimes panic and think I’m going to get done by the tax authorities ! Shit!

I’d like to know what happens if you are found out not paying autonomo? Has any poor person out there been dobbed in to authorities?

If so I’d really like to know what happened.I dont want legal trouble!
