Teaching Through Inclusive Companies like CIEE. A rip off?

After pretty extensive research on teaching English in Spain it would seem that paying a company to do the leg work for you is the most efficient way of doing it. CIEE, the only one of it’s kind I could find, takes care of temporary housing issues, helps with visa issues, and most importantly finds you a job in Andalucia. All of this for a small fee of course which ranges from 800- 3000 dollars depending on what package deal you get. They say that there is a 700 Euro monthly stipend included for the year abroad.

While the money isn’t great is this program a good option?
Has anyone had or does anyone know someone who has had experience with this kind of service?

Are there comparable services offered for placement in Norther Spain (in Barcelona, for instance)?

Are “Private British Schools” in Spain a waste of time and money?

I came across this in one of the threads here, and it got my attention since we’re planning on sending our little girl to a private British School. I wanted to know what other people’s opinions on this are. Are they really as bad as all this?

pepsi - 28 September 2008 07:54 PM

My daughter went to a “private britsh school"in spain and was a total waste of time and money.
In my opinion if in Spain go to a Spanish school and if in UK go to a Btitish school.
It took my nearly 2 years and a lot of money to learn this.
Take advice from someone whos been there, takre your time and think very very hard.

How to get the CAP

Hello all,

I´m a recent college graduate from the USA currently living in Spain with a scholarship to teach English for the next two years. In the States, I am a licensed Spanish teacher and my degree is in Spanish and the teaching of foreign languages. Here´s my question. When the scholarship is up, I´d like to stay in Spain and continue working as an English teacher. In order to do that in a public school, though, I need to first do the CAP course and get certified to be a teacher here.

Here´s the thing… I don´t really know who I need to talk to in order to figure out how to do the CAP. I think I have to homologar my degree first, but since my degree is in Spanish, I don´t know if it´s going to really even work for me to be an English teacher here. Once my degree is homologado, I think I can then do the CAP course.... is that how it works?

Has anyone else done the CAP in Spain to teach in a public school? Does anyone know where I can go or what ministry I could talk to for information about becoming a teacher here? I know all the laws for teaching in the States, but here in Spain I´m lost.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Chris

I’m having some trouble finding out exactly what constitutes Qualified Teacher Status, as some teaching positions here in Spain ask for it.

I hope someone can help!

British Council schools

I understand that the British Council and the Spanish Ministry of Education run a bilingual schools project.

Could anyone provide me with a list of locations as to where these schools are and does anyone have their kids in one of the schools?

How hard is it to get work with the British council as an English teacher? Is it absolutely necessary to have a CELTA certificate or would teaching experience be enough to get a foot in the door?

I hope someone can help out.

Summer Schools - hard work?

Hi all,
I’m giving some thought to coming over to Spain and teaching in a summer school next summer. Never done it before but have always liked the idea. I guess i’m mainly just trying to get a idea of what it’s really like, and especially, how much like hard work is it?! I ask not out of laziness, but out of having a 15,000-word masters thesis to write over next summer! I don’t think this will take up all my time and it seems a shame to confine myself to the UK because of it, but I would need 2 or 3 days a week ideally to work on it. So any tales of what teaching at a summer school was like for any of you who may have done it, would be great.

Also,
- Can you recommend any good schools to teach at/apply to?
- Would I get away with just having a weekend TEFL certificate?

Many thanks for your help…

Andy

Moving from Argentina to Spain

Hi everyone, my name’s Débora and I’m an EFL teacher and a translator based in Argentina. I’m also a teacher of Spanish as a foreign language (Spanish is my mother tongue). My husband and I are seriously considering the possibility of moving to Spain, specifically to or around Valencia (we’ve been there before and we like the area and the people). We’re both EU passport holders.
I’d like to know if there are chances of working in Spain as an EFL/Spanish teacher, having in mind that although I have all the necessary papers, I’m not really a native English speaker.
Thank you for your time.
Débora

Is moving to spain to teach English a good option?

Hi,

I am British. I am seriously thinking of doing a CELTA and moving to Spain to teach English.

Is this a good option. Is it easy to find work with a CELTA? Is it easy to live there on the wages I would earn?

Any advice you can give me would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Schools in Granada???

Hello there,

After having researched and asked about a bit, I have decided that I shall begin tefl job hunting in Granada as of early January.......

But at this point I am thinking it would be wise to gain a clear picture as to how many schools there are and preferably where they are too. I have searched online for just over an hour now to no avail. If anyone knows of a yellow pages equivalent in Granada that I may find online or indeed any info on the Granada teaching scene I please ask of your wisdom.

Many thanks,

Leo.

Hey there--I am new to english teaching in Madrid. I registered on http://www.englishteachersdb.com/ which essentially sends a mass email once a week to every language school in Madrid. The school then sends an email, which the website filters to you. You then have the choice of whether or not to contact them. So, “Speak to Me” has responded to my info. I have seen this company on any of the many TEFL sites I haunt. Anyone know anything about them? They are located near the Arguelles/Moncloa Metros.

TIA,
Liz
