I hope I can get some advice from you on th forum.

I have presented all of my documents to claim Spanish citizenship via the historical memory law almost two years ago. I have heard nothing for the past year, and my emails go unanswered. I am applying through the Los Angeles consulate. Has the government of spain ground to a halt, or are my chances of getting recognized gone? I would appreciate hearing anyone elses experiences, and any insight as to whether my claim should still be active.

Thanks, Dan

Spanish Citizenship while living overseas

Hello everyone I am a Non-EU citizen living in Saudi Arabia and married to a Spanish Citizen. I understand that to get the citizenship I need to hold a residency for 1 year then 2 more years after that to get the passport. I also understand that I can live up to 6 months out of Spain without losing said residency.

My dilemma here is that with the Spanish Economy being what it is currently, the prospects of living and finding work in Spain is not great and I do have a good paying Job in KSA. It is however important for me and my family that I get the citizenship. Therefore my question is it possible to:

1. Get a Spanish residency without giving up the Saudi one?
2. Does one year of residency mean continuous living in Spain or can I go every couple of months for a week to keep it alive?
3. Do I still qualify for the citizenship if point 2 is possible?
4. Any advice on how to proceed without losing my residency and Job in KSA but still qualify for the citizenship?

Thanks,
Sam

Same-sex marriage with a non-EU citizen: legal procedures & requirements?

Hi everyone,

I would like to know if anyone could help me with the possible steps needed to marry my same-sex partner. I am a Lebanese citizen and my partner is Spanish but currently resides in London.

I have done a lot of research to understand better the procedures but I couldn’t find answers to my case…:

My questions would be:

- Could we get married in London as a civil partnership (under the UK law) and would I be able to reside there afterwards, or should it be in Spain? or at the Spanish consulate in London?

- Do i need a special type of visa if I plan on marrying my partner? or this can be done with me entering the UK or Spain with a tourist visa and then converting it to a spouse visa/spouse residency while in the country?

I hope I can find answers here as I couldn’t find answers anywhere on these questions…!

Thanks a lot!

Consequences of not de-registering from spain and then returning.

Hello everyone,

My wife and I went to Spain from Russia, applied for and received 5 year residency in 2009 but sadly had to return to Russia after only 6 months to look after both my in-laws who needed 24 hour care.

We did not work or register with any tax authorities. Both my in-laws have now passed away and we’d like to return to Spain. I am British and my wife is Russian.

However we did not know at the time that we were supposed to de-register from the authorities.

Any advice as to what problems we may face would be very welcome indeed, either on re-entering Spain or when we try to renew or apply for new residency.

Many thanks in advance

Ive got a job but I’m only on a 6 months contract and i know is quite difficult to find job over a winter time - especially here. I heard about spanish unemployment benefit - Paro. I know that you need to work for at least a year in the past 5 years to get it. But if any one know if i can count my 9 months from Gibraltar as well??? I know that some people use to claim Paro after working in Gib but dont realy know how is that work. Please post me if any of you have some informations about it.

Visas for those whose ancestors left Spain before 1930

Hi everyone,

I have a bit of a weird question on behalf of my father. He is quite keen to live in Spain after he retires but despite having four grandparents born/raised in Spain - two in Galicia, two in Basque Country - he is doubtful that this is an option for him. All of his grandparents are currently deceased and permanently entered the US at various times between 1908 and 1915. He is certain that because they came to the US long before Franco came to power that he would be denied an ancestral visa, even on the grounds of Basque heritage. Can anyone confirm this? Is he at all eligible for a visa or citizenship?

Y en Español, just in case - I always appreciate the chance to practice

Advice regarding the transfer of a vehicle in Spain

Many thanks for reading!

I just wanted to ask a question which relates to the transferring of ownership of a Ford Focus (British-bought, RHD, but with Spanish number plates and registered in Spain) which was my late father’s, but which, now that probate in Spain has just completed, is now in my mother’s name.

Essentially, a good friend of my late Dad has offered to buy the car at a mutually agreeable price. The friend also has previous experience of buying/selling cars in Spain. Additionally, he is a very reliable guy, and has proven himself to know a lot about Spanish bureaucracy, et al., over the years. Furthermore, he is already in receipt of all pertinent Spanish documents in relation to the Focus. Nonetheless, my main concern is this:

Without upsetting the apple-cart with the friend, how could I ensure that all the various transfer paperwork is completed in good order so as to avoid a future situation where, because the transfer paperwork wasn’t completed correctly in the eyes of the Spanish motoring authorities, these same authorities then come after my mother at some point in the future over parking fines, penalties, etc., which the new owner (the friend) may have racked up since purchasing the car from us?

To be blunt, I am quite ignorant of the hoops which need to be jumped through to officially complete a vehicle transfer in Spain and, perhaps more worryingly, I have been advised by several other Brits living in Spain that I’d be better off having a solicitor or ‘gestoria’ do everything (rather than solely leaving the transfer to the friend) because one false move could be a nightmare to resolve in the future. The problem is, though, the friend has already begun the paperwork.

At the end of the day, after such a massive trauma of losing a family member I am really just trying to avoid any future unpleasantries for my mother in connection with Spain (whilst, of course, not casting any aspersions about the family friend, as he really is a sound guy).

Any advice would be tremendously appreciated.

All the best and again, many thanks for reading.
