I have been granted an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate scholarship to Spain. I am a Pakistani Citizen and my wife is a US Citizen.

My visa (“visado de investigación para residencia temporal y trabajo para investigación” or “visado para residencia con exceptuación de permiso de trabajo”)

My wife will get “visado para residencia temporal” (visa for temporal residence) or a “visado de residencia no lucrativa” (non lucrative visa).

QUESTIONS

1. The EMJD award letter states “All PhD candidates signing an EMFC are automatically covered by the Spanish Social and Health System. The PhD candidates are also covered by an insurance scheme against risks related to accidents, death, permanent invalidity and civil responsibility according to the rules for researchers of the SETS consortium partners.” The EMJD specifically says that spouses and children are not covered by this insurance. As a temporary residence will my wife also be covered by the Spanish Social Health System?

2. We may have a child in the next year or two. Is childbirth and pregnancy covered by the Spanish Health Insurance? Who can I contact for details about the insurance?

I need some help from people living in Valencia, Almeria, Costa Blanca, Murcia, Costa Calida!

We have always travelled in the Costa Del Sol, Cadiz and Costa Tropical and have been looking for Software jobs in those areas, however, we are now going to expand our search to all of these areas of which we do not know much about and so I want to start learning.
Therefore, can people that live in these areas please give me some names of nice towns to live in, preferably near the coast and within 40 mins of the nearest large city where such jobs may be found?

In the areas we have been to our favourite place to stay was always Nerja and so places that are similar to there would be a good start, i.e. not a huge town but one that has lots of bars, restaurants and shops, preferably a beach but that still has Spanish influence and hasn’t been ruined too much by british belly buster type places (i.e. stay well clear from Benidorm!!!)

I would really appreciate any ideas so that I can start looking into them and hopefully plan a place to go and stay on a holiday at so we can explore further.

Thanks.

Where to live in Madrid

Hi folks,

My partner and I are moving to Madrid from Scotland at the start of August and we are a little unsure about where to rent an apartment. We are looking to rent a one bedroom apartment and we don’t want to spend more than E 750 per month. Is this viable? and if so what areas can anyone recomend. We have been looking on Idealista.com mostly and the areas that seem to stand out so far are Palacio and Embajadores? What are these areas like in terms of safety and social life etc?

One other thing I was quiet concerned about is our distinct lack of Spanish. Will this make finding an apartment very difficult? I have the basics but beyond that I am struggling. I apologise for the barrage of questions but any resposes would be greatly welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Young family with 3 small children possibly moving to Vigo

Hello everyone,

We are in the process of having an interview with a school in Vigo and so far, it all sounds very promising.
We are originally South African, but have lived in Saudi Arabia for the past 6 years and the time has come for us to leave and seek something new and exciting!

Id like to know if anyone has any helpful information for us, such as what its like for families with small children living in Vigo, things to do in Vigo, how far it is to the nearest hustle and bustle of a city centre, shopping in Vigo, extra-surricular activities (my husband is big into his golf and rugby) etc.

Generally, any info will help. Im just concerned about what it will be like for us as a young family coming to somewhere totally different. We are an active family and need space for the kids to get out and about.

I look forward to any help or advice you can give us!

Tammy…x

Where to live in Spain? Work not an issue, Family is..

Hi folks, I realize this is vague but we are at the early stages of upping sticks from the UK and moving to Spain.

I’m fortunate in that I don’t need to work in Spain, my income is made online and safe, so finding work etc isn’t an issue.

I’m going to lay out my criteria and situation below and hopefully this will give some structure to my families requirements and anybody who feels they can help out , especially based on experience, that would be great.

We intend to rent initially, for around a year, I would need a 3 bedroom + office or 4 bed home.

I would like to be either sea view or within 5-10 minutes walk of a nice safe beach.

I would ideally like to spend no more than 1,500 euros a month on rent and rates, electricity if possible. I would like a small garden as I have two young children and a dog and if we could squeeze a teeny pool into that rent, that would be great but it’s not mission critical, just after feedback as to whether that is possible.

I have to a solid, reliable , fast internet connection, at least 10 MB or so. That isn’t an optional requirement.

I have two children, 1 is 5 years old, while I like the idea of mixing into state schools, I’m not sure immediate dunking into all spanish speaking is viable , to much of an upset so I guess private is the only solution and the schooling is important.

As a 40 something, with a family, the club scene is pretty far behind us, while we do occasionally go and shake our stuff once or twice a year, it’s far from our list of important elements to be near a lot of nightlife of that kind.

We do want to be within 10 minute walk or so of a more quiet scene, late night resturants, good food, civilized drinks in the evening sun etc..

I want to be near a safe beach I can take the girls swimming etc.

Our reason for moving are that.. I guess we can.

We’re all a little bored seeing the same grey skies every morning and while we can , we want to go out and try a new scene for at least a few years.

I can speak a little Spanish and existed in Northern Africa for a year on it, I’m sure it will come back and we will both be attending Spanish speaking lessons prior to leaving and once we get there to help us find local friends.

My biggest concern is my wife, she has many friends here and is concerned about meeting friends in Spain, I can totally understand that, I’m not really worried about that end but she enjoys her flits into two with her friends for coffee and goes horse riding and dozens of kids clubs etc , I want her to be really happy so we don’t move and then have a fractious time with her feeling she is isolated.

We have looked at Barcelona as it seems to have a lot on offer, and various areas around it seem interesting and worth checking out but we are totally open to suggestions from people with experience who might be able to help us out.

Thanks in advance.
Dex

Extremadura

Hello,

We, a Dutch family (with 4 children living at home), have the intention to emigrate to the region of Extremadura (near Badajoz).

Finding a suitable home is fairly straightforward. The challenge lies in finding a job or starting our own business. We’ve already started with investigating various topics, but we think it is fine if we can get information and tips from you. My wife graduated in Educational Science and also has gained a lot of practical experience on elementary - and high schools. She is currently in the management team of a ’ green ’ school. I have worked over 30 years in the ICT, the last 15 years as project manager. We want to give another meaning to our lives. And we are not the only ones ...

Of course we have plans what we might do, such as a starting a Bed & Breakfast or starting a school for children of immigrants, or something entirely different. Many hands make light work. What’s known about the tourism and the expectations for the future in this region? Are there already many Dutch people emigrated to the region? Do you have any tips for us?

Thanks in advance for any response.

Eric & Marjolein

Where To live In Barcelona

I’m moving to Spain at the end of the summer and have started looking into places to rent and areas in which to live in. I’m wondering where the best places are to live in Barcelona. Somewhere that’s lively and in close proximity (ideally) to the beach, city center and subway and that’s not insanely expensive. (800 Euros a month if possible).

Any feedback from anyone who is currently living in Barcelona or has lived there before, would be sweet.

Thanks so much!

Getting an NIE number

Hi guys, I’ve just registered so this is my first question, probably of many…

I am living in Madrid and went to the foreigners office of the main police station to apply for my NIE, I got told to ring a number and make an appointment to hand the forms in etc. Well, my appointment is on the 12th September!! I can’t possibly wait that long and I was wandering if anyone had any advice how how to speed things up?

Now I don’t know if its just because I am applying in Madrid and things take longer there due to it being the Capital and there being more immigrants to process, is it possible to apply for the NIE in another city, even if you don’t live there? I have read some personal accounts on here of people going to their local police station in the morning and getting their number by the afternoon, which obviously beats my 3 month wait to even apply.

The other question is how effective is applying through the embassy in London? I could return to the uk for a few months and apply there and then come back when my NIE has come through. If anyone has any experience of that let me know.

Thanks

Miles
