Can anyone give advice on Vicom?

Hi

My first post on this site.

I moved to Mallorca about 3 weeks ago. I managed to swap the previous
resident’s phone bill into my name, order an ADSL wireless router + get it
all running. There have been time delays & hitches, but I am pleased with
the results. Telefonica have a good help line 1004. Wait until it asks
reason for your call (in Spanish), and if your Espanol isn’t good,
simply say ‘I am English, I need help’. Unlike in the UK where the operator
is sullen and unhelpful (and probably doesn’t speak English well), you
will (80% of the time) get through to an operator with excellent
English.

I have a question for the experts in ‘cheap international phone
call’ services. I have some ex-pat friends out here who use a service
called Vicom - does anyone know how well this service rates to some of the
ones that are mentioned here? I saw no reference to Vicom communications
anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Hey amabassador,
I checked into Vicom a bit but couldn’t find anything about them or their services for calls… do you have any links or further information about them from you expat friends perhaps?

Thanks!

Dear ambassadorofthefunk,

I have also recently arrived in Mallorca. I don’t know anything about Viacom but would suggest you look into Skype (http://www.skype.com). My husband and I use Skype through the computer. We purchased wireless phones that work with the skype line and the land line. Skype has a service called SkypeIn, in which you can purchase a local number in serveral different countries for a small fee. I’m from the USA but I think they have numbers in the UK as well. We call the US for about 2 cents a minute. When someone calls us from our US Skype number we pay nothing. I hope this helps.

I have used a couple of different “cheap call” services with good results.

And for friends & family calling you from the UK tell them to look at

Hope this helps.

Do any of them work from mobiles? Had loads of issues with people visiting being ripped off for calls to and from their mobiles. I know that some of the companies in the UK and Telefonica were doing away with roaming charges but will probably up the call charges and connection charges to go with it?

Cheers
Steve
