Calling a Spanish phone booth (also from abroad)?

Hi,

does anyone know if it's possible to call a Spanish phone booth (or if Spanish phone booths - from Telefonica - have their own numbers?). I've been trying to get that number by calling a mobile phone from the phone booth, but when I've called back the number that appeared on the mobile phone I got connected with a modem...

Maybe someone has a clue.

It's quite important as it would the cheapest way of contacting someone without a landline (calling a phone booth with Skype)

Hey Maxi,

Pretty sure you can't call a phone booth, it's not like in the movies ;). I've tried it myself before and it didn't work. If you're getting a modem when you call that number back, perhaps you could hack into the system and place free calls to anywhere in the world (I've seen too many movies, in this case Hackers, good flick).

I know it's quite a bit more expensive to call a mobile phone in Spain, from Skype it's about 0.30/min right? What if the non-skyper went to a Locutorio and called you (you'd need to have Skype-In) or any Internet cafe and used the Skype installed on the computers there (Skype is one of those basic programs installed on every I-cafe computer these days)?

Otherwise, check out the rest of the options for making cheap calls to/from Spain (http://www.spainexpat.com/spain/information/cheap_calls_telephone_service_in_spain/) here on Spain Expat.

Oh yeah, you can check into these roaming VoIP phones that work like cell phones, except that you need a wifi hotspot to connect, allowing you cheap, Skype-like calls from any hotspot. Vonage has them in the UK, also air-bites.com has them here in Spain.

Hope that helps.

That's a shame. I don't know about the movies, but I do know that it's a normal thing in Germany, France, Poland, Slovakia, New Zealand, Canada and the US, so I was really surprised that it's not possible in Spain...

Unfortunatelly it's aprox 10 time more expensive to call a mobile. I'm gonna use the Skype2Skype solution, but the phone booth solution would have been in my case easier (nearest phone booth is 20 meters away and nearest I-cafe 20 minutes away :( )

Anyway, thanks for your help.
