Hi everyone. Can I buy a car in Spain, if I don't have a Spanish driving license? I want to pay in cash, so the dealer is happy but I read something, somewhere once.........?

You don`t need a Spanish license to purchase a car.

You do need an NIE though.

You cannot legally buy a Spanish registered car, new or second hand using your UK passport.

You need one of the following,

An NIE Or Rental contract or property deed Or Certificado de Empadronamiento.

I wouldn`t buy a car from somebody willing to break the law to get shot of it.

Its bad enough UK cars are being driven around without UK tax, Insurance or MOT.

Any UK plated car in Spain should be pulled off the road and the Spanish impose fines and costs for doin it, but then again why would the Spanish govt want to make money, its not as if they run a business. ;-)

Sorry for not being clearer. I'm looking at a Spanish car with Spanish plates, from a Spanish dealer, I have an NIE and an address in Spain. I just read somewhere (or thought I did) that foreigners needed a Spanish Driving licence to purchase a car, and your replies so far have suggested that I don't. If anyone has a contrary point of view let me know. Thanks in advance

All you need is one of the three items previously mentioned.

A Spanish licence has similar rules to a UK one, it allows you to drive a car, has no relation to purchasing one.
