Barcelona metro sucks for parents with strollers / prams

Hola,

Just thought I'd state the obvious and let everyone know that it really sucks having an 18 month old in a stroller, trying to fight your way through the Barcelona metro system.

I don't know the numbers, but it seems to me that few stops have elevators, and it seems fairly random, as to which ones do (Girona, Catalunya, Glories, ....). And (this is just a pet peeve) some have the bizarre distinction of making you go up in order to go down. ...Meaning you go up one elevator, walk across some hallway, then down 2 floors to the platform. ...I love watching tourists try to make sense of the flow chart diagrams that are posted.

Also, the stations that have escalators generally only have ones that go up. This is fine for the average Joe, but it's just as hard to carry a stroller downstairs as upstairs.

They also don't believe in ramps underground either, as there are often 3 or 4 steps up, and then 3 or 4 steps down, randomly. I can't imagine being handicapped. ...How the heck would that work?

Also, beware the transfer. Looking at a metro map, it seems you can easily change lines underground (green to Yellow at Passeig de Gracia for example). However, in reality you have to carry your 35 pound (18 kilo?) kid plus stroller and supplies up and down, up and down, up and down, hundreds of stairs before you get to the platform.

Anyway, that's my rant for the day.

Cheers.

p.s. does anyone have a link to a metro map (or list) that shows which stations do have elevators? thanks.

you are not alone! the madrid metro sucks for strollers too!! elevators are usually only at the new and out of the way stops and sometimes you will see an elevator listed at one station only to arrive and find out that to get to the elevator you have to go up and down several stairs! ugh! the cercanias trains are a little better, but you always have to get someone to help you lug the stroller and baby up onto the train.

You're right - it's shocking the stations that don't have elevators - work has been ongoing throughout 2008 to add new elevators to stations (Liceu, for example) but it seems to take aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggges, right?! Look at te shambles at the moment between Rambla Catalunya for about ten blocks. Even some shops had a "liquidacion de stocks debido al metro" cos it was just too horrible to go there shopping. I have 2 small kids so can totally sympathise!

Hello friends.I totally agree with you .Madrid metro sucks for parents with strollers / prams.I traveled in the metro last month with my Hauck tandem (http://www.icoobaby.co.uk/hauck_baby_care_range/tandem__star_black/10110_p.html) stroller carrying my both babies.I was like hell to me handling the stroller.I think there should be special compartment or a reserved area in the metro to accommodate mothers with strollers.
