Hi,

We’re looking at moving to the Alicante region next year and are doing our research.  One of the things that’s popped up is the quality of internet gaming, and ping times, back to the UK from the Alicante region.  Both myself and my son play, so it’s something we’re both interested in wink

Does anyone have any knowledge, or is willing to help do a simple ping test, so we can get a general idea of the quality?  If you are in the Alicante region and game can you let us know what ping times you see and what the broadband quality is like?  We’re not after that much speed (4 of us share a 2MB connection at the moment) but the line quality and ping time are important.

Thanks,

Paul.

Hey Paul

I am on a 1mb ADSL with telefonica (was 3mb before i moved) and get a decent ping. To some UK servers i get about 80 - 100 but can flucuate at times, spanish servers much better as too are german ones I have been on.
Even though the system over here is still well behind UK and alot of Europe it has improved alot lately and Telefonica are upgrading alot of areas to 6mb. There are some companies to watch out for as they block a number of ports which they claim is to stop downloading, fair enough, but friend of mine was not able to play online gaming for 2 weeks after they blocked that.

Thanks a lot for that Dave, that’s exactly the kind of info I was looking for.  Where we are now I’m lucky to get a 140 ping to a UK server, so anything under 100 will be great.

Is there any kind of gaming fraternity in the Alicante region?  Things like LAN parties or other activities?

Hi Paul,

I have not heard of anything like that over here, not sure how popular it is over here as I knew quite a few people that used to travel over for the UK LAN events when I was in UK.

Good point.  I’ve been away for so long I missed the whole birth and growth of LAN parties (yes, I’m that old lol).

Would you mind doing me a favour?  From your home connection would you please do this:

Open up a command prompt (in windows you can find this under your Start menu, then click on All Programs, then click on Accessories then click on Command Prompt).

Once there can you type in this:

ping http://www.m4gsolutions.com

and let me know the ping times please?  As a reference, this is what I get from here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Paul>ping http://www.m4gsolutions.com

Pinging m4gsolutions.com [91.102.64.132] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 91.102.64.132: bytes=32 time=155ms TTL=106
Reply from 91.102.64.132: bytes=32 time=153ms TTL=106
Reply from 91.102.64.132: bytes=32 time=154ms TTL=106
Reply from 91.102.64.132: bytes=32 time=153ms TTL=106

Ping statistics for 91.102.64.132:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 153ms, Maximum = 155ms, Average = 153ms

If you have even more time, could you type in:

tracert http://www.m4gsolutions.com

and let me know how many hops there are?  Please don’t post the results as that’ll show your IP address as well.

Thanks!

Paul.

Just to follow up on this I eventually went with http://www.telitec.com.  Their system is a tad expensive, it was about 400 euros to have it installed, but there are no lines, it’s got a 1MB SDL connection (so it’s 1MB up/1MB down) and has proved to be fantastic quality.

The pings are much, much better than I had expected and more than good enough to play on UK servers.

Two notes: you’ll need to ask them to open up all ports to game, and they do not allow any form of peer-to-peer usage either.
