Heeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllppppppppppppp!

I really need the internet for my new business, but have been told by both Jazztel and Telefonica that they have no ADSL coverage in my area!

Although Telfonica will give me a landline....

How can I get a reliable internet connection?

Thanks all

hi, emma;
I find it hard to believe that Telefonica cannot offer ADSL in such a built up area as Manilva.
Did you try talking to them on tel no. 1004?
If you don't speak Spanish its not a problem; they have some quite talented English speaking sales staff on that number.
1004 puts you onto an answering machine; at the first break in their announcements just say 'English'; if this doesn't work wait until a human answers and ask for an English speaking operator.
You will need to disclose your post code to them and perhaps your address.

If they really cant do it then iberbanda.es may be your next point of reference; it is Wi-Fi and expensive but if it is all you can get ...

Do not be tempted to use 'telefonicainenglish' you might be one of the lucky ones that manage to get satisfaction from them but it's highly unlikely and you will have a hell of a time trying to get back their 115 euro admin fee if they fail...

Thanks fb,

My Spanish is ok, but as a safer bet (so nothing is lost in transalation) I also got my OH to call them and sure enough no coverage, we can get a phone line but no adsl!

I then rang Jazztel and was told the same thing!

I live in Marbella before and never had this kind of problem, so its pretty frustrating!

I'm in a similar position - the apartment next door has ADSL (10mb) while it is not available in my place!

Hi emma-louise, if you PM me with your address I can check internally if there's DSL or Iberbanda coverage.

Hi Emma,

We use Conecta 4, i think they cover that end of the coast. They also have some good offers at the moment.

Good luck :)

Hi,

I am having a similar problem. I live in La Manga and Telefonica ADSL is unavailable. I'm using a Vodafone Huawei modem which is 40? a month. It's meant to have a 7.2MB connection speed but never goes over 126 kbps which is a nightmare!

I work from home so I need a good connection. I know Vodafone have a 3GB download cap (and then the connection slows down even more) which is also a problem.

Anyone else in La Manga have any ideas? I don't think ONO is available here either and I'm not sure what my options are. I know Movistar do similar modems but they are the same price and probably just as slow.

Just to let you all know that I also use a Huawei Vodafone modem. It usually works OK - about 300 kbps which is adequate for my needs. Right now it is appalling - - slow and continually dropping the connection. It's been OK for 18 months and has been really bad for about two weeks. My initial 18 month contract has now come to an end so I will probably change. I have tried Iberbanda before and it was dismal. Emma-Louise you would be on the same ground station as me - I am in Jimena de la Frontera. The station is on top of Sierra Bermeja. Admittedly I have not used it for 18 months - it might be better now. Remember that Iberbanda is owned by Telefonica. In Jimena we are not exactly blessed with choice - It's Telefonica, Iberbanda or Mobile technology or it was last time I looked. I'll check further and let you know what I find. Meanwhile if you have found a solution please let me know what it is! I think I'm heading for Telefonica and I want to avoid that if possible. Cheers.

I'm still using the Huawei modem. I'm getting about the same speed as you. Here the only option is a Movistar modem or this Vodafone one. They are both about 40 euros a month.

After you have used 3 GB the speed drops right down. It's like with some satellite connections - the more you use the slower it runs because of their "fair use policy" - these things aren't designed for heavy use, mainly for people who occasionally use the internet on their laptops or phones. It's as annoying as hell that Telefonica won't do ADSL to our complex. Some people in the complex have ADSL but Telefonica won't install any more!

Hi Victel

Although I use the internet a lot I don't download much so I've never reached my 3GB limit. As I said - it's been OK up to now - not fast but adequate. It's only the last two weeks which have been bad - almost unusable.

Have you noticed a reduction in service/reliability lately? It might be local to here or I suppose it could just be my account - as I mentioned my contract has just come to an end.

I have tried their English support number. They sound like they're going to be helpful but then nothing happens. BTW the sound quality on the support line is dreadful - I they must be using VOIP - it's really difficult to understand them.

Cheers

I'm in La Manga (Murcia) and it's weird but mine seems to be slightly better the past two weeks. At the start of the month before it hits the 3GB limit it varies between 24 kbps and 2 MB and then it tends to go down to around 264 kbps. Lately it's been OK (apart from this morning but I guess Saturday morning is peak time for other users so they slow it down too). I'm a freelance writer so I have to watch videos/view photos/look at lots of websites which is why I reach the 3GB after a couple of days!

I assume a lot of people complain about the service. How many bars do you have on your control panel? I always have 4 red bars. Do you have a turquoise light on your modem? That means it's connected to the (supposedly) fastest 3G network. Sorry, you might already know all that. I had a 3 GB ADSL connection in Gran Canaria and I thought that was slow. Now I really miss it!!! (The ADSL I mean, there's nothing I miss about Gran Canaria).

Hope you sort something out with yours. Mine seems to have good days and bad days. Let me know if you discover anything new or find a better system and I'll do the same.

Good luck with it!

I dont wish to advertise, but there is the option of Satellite Internet, if you contact me by PM I will send you info, 24/7 always on connection, high reliability up to 10Gb per month download, no restriction on area coverage, only requirement is good line of sight to the satellite.

If they give you a landline, but no ADSL you are too far away from the exchange called a DSLAM, they would need to setup one just for you which is expensive and probably not worth it since one of those things usually serves many residents....maybe satellite is an option, if the 3G/HSDPA is too slow..
but Satellite could do 24mbit down, but might exepnsive, plus you need an upload line somehow.

One of my neighbours in this apartment block has ADSL... but they refuse to give me an ADSL connection! A satellite connection sounds expensive, I've had a couple quotes.
Jan 5, 2010 · mickgraham
I would phone telefonica again ask for adsl. My partner is spanish speaking and she phoned for a friend of ours and they said no way could they connect adsl. However the neighbours have it!

Two days later we phoned again and ask if we could have it even at a slower speed and lo and behold 2 days later the router arrived and my friend had 512mb adsl.

Maybe its worth a try.

OR, you could try soliciting your adsl from a different company like Orange for example and they will verify finally if you cant have adsl thru them.

I have connected hundreds of adsl customers over the years and nothing is ever sure with telfornica!

Persevere!

Do you have the response why they don't setup more DSL at your complex ??

IF you wish PM with details and i can look internally to see if it could be done.

Just to let you know that I have completely given up on my Vodafone USB Dongle as the service was crap and gone for Telefonica landline ADSL.
Jan 15, 2010 · Pieter Vos
In most of the cases I advise wired options before wireless, dongles sound great, but most cases you have to be at a good place to have it working at desired speed.

I live in Alhaurin el Grande, Malaga. I have used Iberbanda for 4 years and have had nothing but problems with them. During this time I have registered over 250 complaints because of no connection or a speed well below the 10% guaranteed. I have twice tried to denounce them through the system via The Ministerio de Industria but got nowhere as Iberbanda covered up all their problems.

In the last month it is impossible to use the internet after 5pm due to over saturation and outdated equipment in the area. This has been confirmed by two independent Spanish installation companies who have surveyed my installation. I recently read in the local paper of another expat user who has had the same issues and asked what he could do. Another reader replied that he might as well give up as no one cares a damn.

Yesterday I spoke with Iberbanda tecnicos and atenci?n al cliente. It is hard to believe this, but both advised me to cancel my contract with them and try and find an alternative, as the company is not prepared to spend any money in this area improving the current situation. When I reminded them that I had paid on average ?uros 50:00 pm for the last 4 years for a completely unreliable service, and expected some kind of refund, I was told that I could try and get one, but if I did, it would be a first. No way has Iberbanda come even close to honoring their contract.

I have friends in other parts off Spain who use Iberbanda and they have no problems whatsoever. Unfortunately it all depends on where you live. If the equipment is kept up to date , everything seems to run well. In my area it needs money spending on it. Most of my neighbors are in the same situation and we have all tried to get Telefonica to install land lines, but obviously as long as they can con the current users via Iberbanda they are not likely to do anything.

What a sad state of affairs!

Hey

My Name is Andrew Mattocks-Lewis and I work for British Telecom in Spain. There is a very simple test that we can do which will allow us to establish if your line can support ADSL internet. I would need your telephone number and could have the information for you within 24 hours. My details are

andrewml@btinspain.com
tel: 671974753

I have just helped a client who was in the same situation as you, Telefonica were saying they could not have ADSL, I checked the line for them and there was no apparent reason for this as the exchange could support it, I signed them over to the BT platform and they now have ADSL internet.

Get in touch and I will see what we can do for you

Hi ,
to all those trying to get internet here is some general advise from someone who has been here 7 years ( my spanish is also good )

If you have an active telefonica line and account for a land line , you CAN have adsl . Be aware though that the quality of the land line may not always be up to the job ( ie if it is old ) . So it may be that Telefonica will not be able to guarentee the speed or quality of the packages they offer to customers . If for example you want 10 MB adsl it could be that the line may not actually get that speed so this means you are paying for something you dont get. Telefonica would want to avoid complaints so it may be that they say you cant have it in your area just to deal with the issue quickly.
You can of couse get adsl from other companies where they specify that a land line is needed .
I have had adsl in my apartement in fuengirola from Ya.com for 4 years now and it is generally reliable . But I had to get the package changed to a cheaper option as the 10mb service I was paying for was actually only good for up to 5mb !
Yes , you can go for Iberbanda and connecta 4 ( I used to fit these systems and they do work and the tariffs offered for calls are very good ) Just remember though that there is an initiall install charge and you must have line of sight to the transmitter. Dont let anybody try to tell you different . Also watch for electicity pylons in close proximity to the reciever as it can cause interference.
The bandwidth ( hence the speeds you get) can get affected if the number of customers recieveing off one particular transmitter becomes such that it cannot cope with the load . The company should be able to test and rectify this though.

wishing you all good luck .

There is a new Government funding ssheme where they will install for free Satelitte internet and a phone line if you want for 25 euros per month , if you have a Spanish bank account and a NIE you are eligable. It is a great system and I pay 25 euros per month for internet and 9 uros for my line . I arranged it through a site called every1connect.com

The grant covered the Satelitte equipment and installation which consisted of dish, lnb, router and cabling , I purchased a wi fi router as an extra with voip phone capability. I did not do any of it , just sent my details and the company processed it. I made lots of enquiries to satelitte companies but their equipment is so expensive to buy and install I had given up .

All.... Not an advert?

Sounds like a straightforward http://www.quantis.es/eng installation to me... nothing to do with government grants, Quantis have been advertising this free equipment and installation service for at least six months...

solgirl... I see your IP address decodes to the UK... hiding behind a proxy perhaps?

I note also that you have posted on at least one other Spanish forum under the name Castellon... strange that you should use that name given that the two web url's you quote both tie back to a common owner in Castellon...

The 25? subscription is Quantis' minimum level of service, is capped and subject to quite a strict FUP as you will no doubt find out if you go over your traffic limit....
