Web Standards. I bet you?ve never heard of them. What is more, you?re probably thinking this is going to be a dull article for computer geeks and you?re already thinking about clicking on the back button to return to the forums. But you?d be wise to hold fire for a moment and read what I am going to say. Why? Well in a nutshell, your livelihood may depend on it. So if that?s not a reason to stay then I don?t know what is.
Let?s set a fictitious scene. You have a small property sales and rental company and you decide to get a website. Some time later your proud web designer announces that its all systems go and you?re on the World Wide Web.
This is the start of greatness you?re thinking. With this website you?re just a matter of time away from getting the hoards of visitors you?ve always dreamed about and this will mean money. Sales will zoom through the roof and there?ll be no looking back. After all the site looks quite flashy, it has moving text, the buttons change colour when you click them and it even has a little movie running at the top of the page with some great photos of the Costas. How can anyone not want to buy from you with a website as pretty as yours?
So, with great enthusiasm you put the site address on your business cards and tell friends, family and neighbours about it and sure enough everyone you tell takes a look and your visitor stats bare this out. They all tell you how nice it looks and they love the graphics on the site and how the movie at the top of the page looks so good.
You?re on to a winner here you think, as everyone loves it. In fact you haven?t found many other sites that look so flashy and those ones who come out top of Google rankings when you search your business sector look quite plain in contrast. So you?re convinced that everyone will prefer yours over the competition and the market is yours to conquer.
6 months later, the story is different. You just can?t seem to get that site to be found on Google and the other search engines don?t rank you very highly either. You start saying to yourself that the website is just there because your competitors have one and really you think other forms of marketing are what are required. So the website slips from your attention and doesn?t get the promotion it once did. After all, you have never had any decent enquiries from it and people rarely find it at all when they are searching in your field.
You put it all down to experience and the fact that the internet and computers are so complicated that you couldn?t find out why your site has failed anyway. Probably you?ll let the website tick along for a couple of years as it doesn?t cost much to maintain and after all you paid all that money to have it built in the first place.
Now here?s one of the main reasons it happened and one that makes CB Web Solutions a leader in our field. In simple terms, you chose a web designer who doesn?t know how to design to Web Standards level or maybe has never heard of web standards. That probably means nothing right now but please read on to find out what it really going on.
There are probably three types of web designers around, those who have never heard of web standards, those who have heard of them but have chosen not to use them or are unable to design to that level and companies like CB Web Solutions (http://www.cbwebsol.net/)who use them and see them as a vital part of web design and good practice.
So what are Web Standards?
Well, Web Standards is an on-going project of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) which is THE international body working to promote best practice on the internet. In other words, they are quality standards. Members include: Microsoft, AOL, Intel, IBM, Google, Yahoo, and frankly any major corporation who is anyone in the field of Information technology.
As we at CB Web Solutions value our clients and regard the internet as an ever evolving entity we incorporate them into our design. Most of our competitors fall into the first two categories and so your site will not be up to the standard you might think it is. In other words it will be all appearance and no quality. This is one of the main reasons why your site doesn?t get visitors like you hoped. It has been built poorly even though it looks flashy. As such the search engines like Google or Yahoo that we all use don?t like your site, don?t understand it and shunt it well out of the reach of all but the most patient of net surfers. They are telling you to change it!
These standards will make the internet faster, easier to use and more accessible to those with disabilities. Using them for your website will make your site stand out from most in your field. We at CB Web Solutions work to web standards criteria; you will see recognition of this fact when you visit our home page as some small W3C badges have been awarded to our site due to the world class design structure we use. Most of our competitors only dream of being able to design to this, the highest quality level around.
So now you know Web Standards = Quality but more importantly still, there is evidence that sites built to world class standards (such as our own at CB Web Solutions (http://www.cbwebsol.net/)) enjoy a higher search engine ranking and therefore greater potential for profitability.
So what can be done to save your site and help your business? You need a site re-design to give it the quality of constructon it is missing and deserves. A sign redesign is quick and cost effective. If you don?t re-design, your site will decline still further in its ranking and will never help your business reach its potential. On that alone you should do something. So why not contact us at CB Web Solutions to discuss a site re-design as quickly as possible as this will save you money and stop you missing out on potential clients.
