Half Spaniard wants citizenship

Hello,
I am half Spanish, my mother is from Sevilla and I also lived in Spain as a child. I am very proud of my Spanish heritage and I travel back once a year. I think it is sad that I can not stay longer because I do not have Spanish nationality.
Is there any way I could go about getting a Spanish passport? I was born in April 1978. Some have said yes while others have said no. I just would like some clarification.
Being Spanish is part of my identity. I feel a strong connection to my mother's country. I even have a Master's degree in Spanish Literature and Art. I would really love some information!
Thanks a lot,
Jessica

I have a U.S. passport and was born in the U.S. My father is American and my mother is Spanish...she still retains her Spanish nationality. Does this entitle me to become a Spanish national?
Thanks,
Jessica

Agreed. If your mother has retained her Spanish nationality, then you should have an easy (enough) time getting your passport. I believe you must take your mother with her passport to the embassy. That this point they will probably get her to file for a Libro de Familia (search around the site here for more on that). That will be your ticket into the system.
