Hi Emily,
You're right, VOIP (http://www.spainexpat.com/spain/information/voip_in_spain/) isn't just hype, but I'm surprised that having had Vonage that you switched to Skype. I went the other way around (Skype first, then Vonage) and haven't looked back. You just can't get the same call quality on Skype and it's easy to see why when you look closely. Vonage (http://www.spainexpat.com/spain/information/voip_in_spain/) uses about 3 times more bandwidth (although you can adjust this) which, if you have a decent ADSL or cable Internet connection (http://www.spainexpat.com/spain/information/internet_in_spain/), is nothing. A friend of mine calls me from Thailand on Skype all the time and I have to call him back from my Vonage on his cell phone - the call quality just frustrates me.
