American/Spanish Dual Citizenship?

> I've clarified with America that I am allowed to become a dual-citizen through marriage.

Unfortunately she was unable to answer my question about Spain specifically.

The Spanish oath does ask me to revoke previous citizenship.

Has anyone married into Spanish citizenship? Know of anyone who has? Specifically someone from America, as it's my American citizenship I'm afraid of loosing!

Any advice would be helpful,

The fact that you are getting married to an Spanish citizen doesn't mean that you get Spanish citizenship automaticly. You would be entitled to get the Spanish citizenship after a time, and according to the Spanish Law if you request the Spanish citizenship you should renounce to the American one (as only citizens from some countries former colonies of Spain are allowed to have dual citizenship). However, although the Law says that, the Spanish authorities are not enforcing such Law properly, as there are many many persons with dual citizenship from countries that are not former colonies of Spain (UK, Australia, Germany, etc).

I checked with the embassy, I am a Spanish Citizen living in the US and I would like to become a US citizen.
To the US you are a US citizen and that's it, they don't care if you are also a citizen from Spain, they don't let the Spanish authorities know that you became a US citizen. In my case when I visit Spain I'd use my Spanish passport to avoid complications, that's what the embassy told me.

So basically you can be both.

This may help as well, I do realize he is trying to do the other way around:


"A person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship. Intent can be shown by the person's statements or conduct.The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy because of the problems it may cause. Claims of other countries on dual national U.S. citizens may conflict with U.S. law, and dual nationality may limit U.S. Government efforts to assist citizens abroad."

So you are not intentionally giving up US citizenship!!

I am in the same boat, about to start the process of applying for Spanish citizenship. The US verified that your citizenship is not at risk? I do NOT want to lose my citizenship... can you tell me who you spoke to to verify this?

I realize the llaw says "unless your intention is to give up your US citizenship", which of course, it is not..

Am I okay then!?
