How to get a Social Security number?

I have recently arrived in Spain (Estepona) and am a Brit. I have been offered work but was told that I need to get NIE and Social Security numbers before I can start. I got the NIE number painlessly enough, but can someone please tell me how I go about getting a Social Security number and what is involved?
Thanks in anticipation

Thanks, that is about as useful as a chocolate ashtray on a motorbike. Still, your plug for your blog about sitting in a reading room in Paris works well. Great.....

I am sorry you feel like that - my post was intended as a useful reply like the 100s of other I have posted over the years which have been appreciated by many people.
Anyway I hope someone is able to provide what you are looking for.

Your reply was bereft of any useful information and the link has nothing to do with the practicalities of how to go about getting a SS number (follow the link). If you were honest, it was just a way to put a link in for your blog spot. Splendid. And by the way, you may have posted 100's of helpful replies..... I am sure we are all terribly grateful.

Brand new to the forum and bitching already? You'll do really well in Spain.
Found this just three clicks away from Robs link on the same website.

I'm pretty sure its the one you need, along with your NIE and Passport and to be safe maybe two copies of each.

I don't get it - the guy must have been on something. What I posted was what I did to obtain my SS number. Whether anyone clicks through to my blog link or not frankly I don't give a damn - I am not selling anything.

Don't worry about it Rob. Fools are a dime a dozen. We can only moderate them and move on. There are plenty of people who would and have appreciated your contributions.

But it is what you need to do d..y, go to your local Health Centre with you EU III Health card and Passport, certificate of empadriamiento ( this from the local Town Hall). They will then issue you with a temporary card, following this you need to supply a form which you need from the S.S in the U.K. This can be sent by post to you if you ring them, simply state your situation to them.

Hello. Can I suggest that you speak with the people or company to ask them how they intend to employ you. Self employed or will they pay your social security and the type of contract you can expect. To obtain your SS number you will as stated below need your NIE (consider residency) your passport and a recent copy that shows that you are registered on the padron (Town hall census) a little help from your would be employer would help like something telling the SS office that you will be employed. Then to your relevant local office with a big smile and as much Spanish as you can conjure up. Do not accept no as an answer and stand your ground. If you are lucky you will get a nice person at the counter who will assist you. Hope this has been helpful.

Hello....The easiest way to apply for a Social Security number for your child is to complete a birth registration form, which has a box you can check to request a number for your child. To complete the form, you will need to provide both parents' Social Security numbers.
