Iceland volcano Grimsvotn eruption
Hjordis Gudmundsdottir, a spokeswoman for the Isavia civil aviation authority - which has imposed a flight ban of 120 nautical miles (222 km) around Grimsvotn - said: "We have closed the area until we know better what effect the ash will have."
Keflavik airport, the country's main hub, will remain shut for the rest of the day, the authority said.
But officials say the eruption is unlikey to have the same impact as last year's.

The only airspace in Iceland been closed today , Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull caused chaos when it erupted in April last year.
Authorities halted flights due to fears that dust and ash would get into aircraft engines and cause accidents after the cloud was blown into European air traffic lanes.

Ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland could begin to drift across the UK towards the end of the week, forecasters have said , A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said: "We're monitoring the situation closely and working with our colleagues at National Air Traffic Services and the Met Office.
"There's no effect on UK airspace at present. We're just waiting to see which way the ash plume moves. We should have more of an idea within the next 12 hours to 24 hours

Flights in Scotland are cancelled and the US president has flown to London early as a volcanic ash cloud heads towards the UK. He was to stay in Ireland for 24 hours but was cut short . Aer Lingus , BA , KLM , Easyjet , Flybe , Loganair , Ryanair and Eastern Airways have cancelled services on Tuesday, as ministers said some flights over the Atlantic were delayed. Glasgow Prestwick and Edinburgh Airports are subject to delays and possible cancellations with Uk and Ireland disrupted later this week from an ash cloud billowing from the volcano.. A spokeswoman for EU transport commissioner Siim Kallas has suggested that the picture was less certain . Siim Kallas has said that 'there is at the moment a possibility of volcanic ash affecting the European airspace starting with the northwestern areas like the UK and Ireland possibly today or tomorrow . IAA's (Irish Aviation Authority) senior aviation executive Martin Towey has said that 'we do not believe that there will be any kind of disruption in the next 48 hours. Martin Towey has said that 'there could possibly be some disruption towards the end of the week . Met ?ireann meteorologist Pat Clarke has said that the ash cloud is expected in Irish airspace by tonight .

Thousands of passengers in Scotland and parts of northern England struggle with flight cancellations as ash from an Icelandic volcanic eruption blows in two Uk , Ryanair has cancelled all flights to and from Scotland as airspace there has been closed due to the ash cloud , That had to back down when IAA?s (Irish Aviation Authority) told them wasnt safe .

Airports affected include Londonderry, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Prestwick, Durham Tees Valley, Newcastle and Carlisle, air traffic services company Nats said.

About 500 flights were cancelled in Europe on Tuesday, air traffic management body Eurocontrol said . approximately 29,000 that would have been expected today across Europen . There is a strong possibility that the ash cloud may impact parts of Denmark, southern Norway and south-west Sweden by tomorrow .
Ireland and Uk airspace is open again my early tomorrow 07.00 CET . The Irish Aviation Authority has said there will be no restrictions in Irish airspace for at least 24 hours .
Germany is to shut down airports in the north of the country tomorrow morning because of the ash coming from an Icelandic volcano.
No flights will be allowed to take off or land at Bremen from 04.00 CET or Hamburg from 05.00CET, German Air Safety (DFS) said in a statement late tonight.
The statement did not mention Hanover, which is also in the north . It said Berlin's airports 'may also be affected... through the course of the morning'.
Due to unstable meteorological conditions, it is not possible to identify with certainty the movements of the ash cloud beyond that time frame
During last year's eruption of the neighbouring Eyjafjoell volcano, over 100,000 flights were cancelled and eight million passengers stranded, dealing a harsh blow to the airline industry, particularly in Europe .

As of 17:00 CET today, EUROCONTROL has the following update to make with regard to the situation of air traffic in Europe as a result of the eruption of the Grimsv?tn volcano in Iceland.
According to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) in London, areas of ash concentration were over the north of Germany today. As a result, approximately 450 flights were cancelled in German airspace, mainly affecting the airports in Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin.
On a normal day, these airports would expect around 120, 480 and 530 flights respectively. The German airports are currently fully accessible again According to the VAAC forecasts, it is expected that ash cloud coverage will dissipate overnight.
Tomorrow, we do not expect any significant impact on European airspace .
