We (our family) are moving to Spain. However, one of my sons has been diagnosed with Leukaemia, and has to have ongoing treatment.  We are trying to find out which Hospitals have a paediatric oncology (childrens cancer) specialisation.  I would be grateful for any information about this, as we can then narrow our search for accommodation down to an area within an hour of the best hospital.    We were initially hoping to relocate to the Costa del sol, malaga, or Murcia areas.

Also do we have to pay for the childrens medical, or is it just us grown ups?  I am hoping to work, so i presume it would then be free medical care?

Hola Sam99

Best of luck in your search for the specialised hospital and I hope they can offer the care you need.

Have you got private medical insurance now that you could get cover for in Europe?

If you do not then you would pay to get insurance when you get here, there are various companies who can offer you healthcare support

All the best

Hola Sam99

Where are you moving to in Spain?

I have Scoliosis so I have been to quite a few hospitals here in search of a scoliosis specialist, finally find one in Marbella and I go to see him now, glad I have someone I can get care from 😊

Fruity,

We were hoping for somewhere along marbella, slightly inland, or murcia way - not too fussy.  But that may all change now, depending on the hospital situation.  We will now find the hospital, then look within an hours drive of it!

Do you have any ideas?

Hola

Please call me Simone, Fruity is just a nickname 😊

I use the USP hospital in Marbella and have found them to be great, I have a blog post about my time there, what happened and how I felt I was dealt with, might be helpful to you

I have confidence in the USP hospital, I have even tried their Pilates classes and was very impressed with the teacher, especially how I felt after I had the work out

I wouldn’t recommend the Costa del Sol hospital, I have nothing positive to say about that place!

I have also been to the Xanit hospital, again, professional, caring and know their stuff, I was referred to the Xanit hospital last year, I did not see a Dr there as I had already told them I wanted to have the MRI only and then go to my Dr in the USP

One of my friends works at the Fundacion Carreras in Barcelona (it’s similar to the Anthony Nolan Trust). You should give them a call for more information, I’m sure they’d be more than happy to help. Google Fundacio Josep Carreras and the phone number will come up. There are a few people there who speak english. Good luck and I hope your son makes a speedy recovery.

Thanks for all your help,  so if we are residents we get free health care?  How soon can we get that?  Also, if we work there do we get free health care, or is it better to get private?

Tom is doing really well at the moment with his chemotherapy and I am struggling on with my Spanish lessons!
