Hi All

I am living and working in Valencia, I have been here for over 4 years and am well integrated into the Spanish lifestyle.
I work for a holiday apartment rental company who specialise in Valencia City Centre apartments and Valencia Beach apartments.
I hope I am able to help answer any questions about Valencia and of course anyone visiting the area needing some guidance please feel free to ask away.
We are now in Las Fallas here in Valencia, a fiesta I can definately recommend!

I look forward to participating in the forum.

Hi Valton and welcome,

We were wondering about the Fallas… we’re living about an hour down the coast from you, and we have daughters aged 9 and 3.  We want them to experience all Spain has to offer culturally, but I was wondering exactly how safe and accessible this particular fiesta is for children - or would we be better trying to get into Denia for a more local and scaled down version?  Everything I have read and seen makes me want to head to Valencia but maybe it’s not a good idea with the girls..?  What do you think?

Hello Maya
Everything is pretty safe, but if your children don?t like noisy situations a smaller version might be better. The local children love it, they all have crackers and mini fireworks, so there are bangs going off all over the place.
The masclet? is very well fenced in and with the amount of people who come to see it you probably won?t be able to get too close with the children, which is probably a good thing, it is very loud. They recommend (if you are really close) to keep your mouth open a fraction so as to release the pressure on your ears!
The statues are well worth seeing, some are huge and contain characters that your children will recognise.
I don?t know how the fiesta in Denia is, whether they have just the one falla or is split into “barrios”.
I love the whole atmosphere, but for a 3 year old, they would have to be a very out going sort who doesn?t mind the bangs! maybe visit Denia first and see how it goes, as you are so close, you can then come up here for a day afterwards if all goes well.

I hope you have a great time! I am sure the atmosphere will be just as good. Don?t forget to advise the girls about the bangers going off all around, if you are prepared its not so bad.

I am really enjoying myself! went to the bull dodging (recortes) on sunday, that is spectacular, been several times now and still can?t stop my heart jumping into my mouth each time the bulls charge! I?m sure they are getting closer each year.
Tonight is my big night out, going to watch the fireworks in the river bed (at 1.30am!) then a walk around the city looking at the fallas and enjoying the atmosphere, after all ma?ana es fiesta!

HI Valton,

Just wanted to update, we all really enjoyed the Fallas in Denia.  Yes the mascletas were a bit loud for the kids esp when we came upon one in a really narrow built up street where the sound and smoke seemed to have nowhere to go!  And the general hurling of firecrackers etc was a bit anarchic (my eldest kept saying ‘so how old do I have to be to be allowed fireworks Mum?’ (Answer: older than me!), but the Fallas themselves were incredible works of art and creativity, as well as the whole fiesta vibe being just amazing…  there really is no comparable experience in the UK, we don’t know how to party like that.  One year when the girls are a bit bigger and a bit more acclimated we will get up the coast to Valencia for the main event!

Hey Maya

So glad you got there and enjoyed it! it truly is an experience not to be missed eh!
The Masclet? in Valencia this year were even better than any years I?ve seen, they really went to town, especially the local pyrotecnics. One display was dedicated to the “deaf” and it was obvious why!

I witnessed a different emotional side to the Las Fallas this year, I was present at an offering of flowers to a virgin “la ofrenda”. It was in an old peoples home, they all took turns to walk (even get out of wheel chairs) the short length of the room to give flowers to a statue, they make a wish for the future etc. Very emotional! A lot clamer than the street!
