I applied for my Spanish Nationality about 3 weeks ago and have received a call from the local Registro asking me to come in to speak with the Judge for ‘some questions’.

I am assuming that they will be looking to see how I have integrated in the daily society, Spanish friends, etc, but apart from this, can someone tell me what the interview will be about?  Do I need to prepare for anything specific? (In America, the foreigners are given a serious test and in the end, know more about our country than we do! 😊)

I read somewhere in this forum that witnesses may be needed, but the Registro person did not say anything about this (perhaps this is something different).

FYI - I am an American citizen, resident of Spain, married to my Spanish wife and a Spanish business owner.

Thanks.

Wow, you got a phone call after 3 weeks to talk to Judge? What city are you in?

My appointment is for January 2011 (yes not even 2010!). I applied recently in mid Feb 2009. Thats in Barcelona. They told me it could be earlier… But from other people experiences its not less than a year anyway.  I assume it differs from one registro to another.

Definitely keep us posted about the interview and how fast you are moving forward in this process.

I applied (and am resident/live) in Almunecar, in Granada.  (We are a small town on the coast).

My meeting is this Monday, so as soon as I can, I will post an update and let you know what it was all about.

I guess living in a small town explains it… In Barcelona it takes almost 2 years!!! i’m so pissed.
I guess i’ll have to go to Almunecar and get empadronamiento there 😊 and apply for citizenship in a local Registro Civil!

Well, not so unexpectedly (knowing Spain), the interview turned out to actually be an invitation from the local Registro to resubmit my paperwork as they had completed the incorrect statements/forms.  I didn’t meet with anyone other than the functionario at the Registro to sign another document.

I have done this and things are now (!) are going to be processed.

They have told me that it will take about 2-3 months to clear the local Registro, then up to 2 years in Madrid.

Sigh…
