I took my friend to register for his free health care entitlement (he is a full pensioner) to the Social security office in Orihuela today and was amazed that they also automatically issued him with his Spanish European Health Insurance Card at the same time.  Gave me a moment of panic though thinking she had misunderstood why we there!

Yeap you get two Medical Cards now..

One is for Spain… and the other is if you go on holiday etc abroad (EU) this covers Europe…

I was surprised too!
