Letter of Good Conduct for student visa

Hi, I’ve recently received a position from the Spanish government to be a North American Language & Culture Assistant in Madrid for the 2009-10 school year.  So, we have to get a student visa.  But the one thing I’m worried about is getting that in order to get it, we have to have a police certificate saying we don’t have a police record.  I got two DWIs from 2005-06.  It was stupid, I know.  And I don’t drink at all anymore and I haven’t broken the law since, and I’m off probation and everything.  I really, really want to do this, so is there any way I can still get the student visa?  I was thinking about getting a 6-month visa because it doesn’t require the police certificate, and then coming back to the US and re-entering Spain on a 90-day tourist visa.  Would that work?  Or is there a limit on how soon you can return to Spain after the 6-month visa expires?
Thanks,
Kenneth

I was actually wondering that too.  Not about the police letter, but my 6 month student visa expires in December.  I’m going home then, but then do I have to wait before I can go back to Spain on a tourist visa?  Or could I theoretically just turn around and go right back for 90 more days?

Thanks.  So, I have to stay in the US for at least 21 days after my 6-month visa expires??  Then my plan won’t work since I can’t miss 3 weeks of work.  I suppose I’ll have to apply for the year-long visa, admit the DUIs, and hope they give me the visa anyway.  Do you think there is any chance I’d still get the visa with two DUIs??
