My grandfather was 100% spanish, both his parents were born in spain. His older siblings were also born in spain, because of the war, my grandfather was born in Cuba, and then came to live in the US as a refugee. With the historical memory law, my grandfather who is now deceased would become spanish, and my father would become spanish too. My grandpas brothers grandchildren would become spanish citizens, but I can’t.  It seems really unfair because I can’t be spanish, and I’m not cuban. Still I carry the last name…Is there anyway I can go around it? Or how else would I go about getting spanish citizenship?

I wish you luck on that one! Why be denied your birthright? Especially when people with less rights to citizenship, including me, could do so if they want to.
Although I was born in mainland Britain my father was Irish born. Therefore, both I and my sons’ are Irish citizens as an automatic right. It doesn’t have to be applied for. I have an Irish passport, which of course does have to be applied for. My sons’ could too if they wish to.
Irish citizenship has its advantages apart from mere pride as to one’s national and birthright status. I find travelling easier. The Irish are better liked and less problematic; perhaps due to the UK’s foreign policy.

Hi Fran

Really sorry to hear about your problems to get Spanish citizenship. I am afraid that the historical memory law is clear in this regard and you will not be able to get the Spanish nationality following that route.

The only alternative way you have to get the Spanish nationality is by means of being legally resident in Spain for no less than 10 years (there are special cases to reduce these 10 years to five, two or one year, but your I am afraid you will not be able to use any of those cases. In order to be able to get Spanish residency, you need to either prove you have sufficient incomes to live in Spain or alternatively to get work permit in Spain.

You could also get married with a Spanish citizen, but obviolsy that is much difficult to control my friend…

All the best

It just seems really unfair. My dad can get citizenship through his grandfather & my aunt can too, even though their dad was 100 percent spanish. My aunts infant child can have citizenship, but not me? *pouts and throws a fit*

I wonder if my dad gets citizenship, if I could then get citizenship too.

There has to be a line somewhere.

Spain is actively trying to remove immigrants from Spain, the govt cannot afford to pay benefits to unemployed people who are Spanish, never mind immigrants coming from a distant relatives.

The job situation is bad, very bad in Spain, most are employed in the black money world, which was big pre crisis, its huge now.

Well this law is stupid then, my grandfathers brothers grandchildren can have citizenship. My dad has to get citizenship through his grandfather because his dad who was 100% spanish isnt being considered spanish. My dads sister, and her infant child can get citizenship. SO I think it’s unfair, and I understand that there must be a cut off, but at least make the cutoff fair. My dad & aunt don’t even want spanish citizenship as they loathe spain.

I dont know about the unemployment in Spain, but if it’s like Sweden, they should change it. People who are capable of working should work, and if they have to move, so be it. There are so many parasitic people living in sweden when the government pays for all their expensives. They should put a limit on how long they can stay unemployed and see that everyone who is unemployed is actively looking for a job.

The only thing I want from a spanish citizenship is the right to enter & be in the country as I please. With a spanish citizenship, I’d also be able to do the same with greece which is the other motherland.

Unless you’re non-EU I don’t see what the problem is   ...  those of us who are are citizens of what is effectively The United States of Europe. Same as someone from Louisiana and another from Ohio; proud of their roots but first and foremost; Americans. U.S. citizens.
