Hello, I’m about to register freelance (Autonomo here in Spain). Currently my new passport is in my married name, but my NIE is in my maiden name as I got that a over a year before. I’d really appreciate some help with the following questions…

1. To register with Tax and Social Security as ‘Autonomo’, do both my passport and NIE need to be in the same name? Or can I just evidence its me with a marriage certificate (UK) and lost/stolen passport report (Spanish)? I am already in the systems from working on fixed term contracts where my employer did all the paperwork.

2. Possibly more easily - where do I look for information / how do I get an updated NIE? Is it the same system/forms as applying for your first one? How long does it take to get a replacement? I have also moved address too. I hear the system has changed now but am clueless about how to go about it.

Thank you!!  😊

sarahinmadrid,
since your nie is in your maiden name, first register using that name and show an old uk passport if they ask for id.
why? it is still you anyway.
later on you can go to the comisaria and ask which comisaria issues the “certificado registro de residente comunitario” in the city where you reside.
fill in this form
http://www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/extranjeria/modelos_extranje/ex_16.pdf
with your married name and new address, etc and submit it together with the requirements to have your nie data updated.
once you have the new certificate, you can go back to hacienda and any tesorer?a de seguridad social to update your data.

The same thing happened to me and (as always) in Spain it’s not as easy as you think. I had an old residence card in my maiden name and a passport in my married name. I had to renew the residence card which I then got in my married name. In order to show I was still the same person I then had to get un certificado de concordancia which is a certificate to show that this person with document number x is the same as this person. I got this from extranjeria. The only problem is that you need to have a Spanish official id document in each name as they won’t do it for a passport from another country. I used the residence card from before and after. I then had to give a copy of this certificado to EVERYONE - the bank, social security, tax office, health centre etc etc. and I still occasionally get letters and documents in my maiden name which just confuses everything!
I would suggest getting another certificado de residencia from wherever they are allocated for your area and then applying for the certificado de concordancia from you local extraneria office using the old nie certificate and the new one.
