Hi, we are possibly moving to Barcelona in the fall from NYC, what do average furnished apts go for?  Does anyone have an idea about costs of living…simple break down would be great.  We are just trying to see if we could make it on 1 salary.  Thanks!

Depends on location but anything from 800 Euros to thousands.

Although here is a search with Kyero and the cheapest 3 bed in Barcelona city was 1,000 euros per month on a long term let, but unfurnished and only 80sq meters, which is really small.

I’ve known people struggle on a monthly income of 2,500 Euros a month.

Barcelona suffers like all major cities that are in demand, the general population cannot afford to live there with the wages there on.

The average wage in Spain is around 1,000 euros, higher in Barcelona, but the only way to survive is on a large income, which always leads me to ask why are they paying a foreigner big wages, especially in a country full of good Universities and with high unemployment levels in general and also in its graduate population.

Sorry to put a worrying thought, but I’ve come across many who got promised good incomes, which never arrived, it happens a lot.

My advice would be to arrive and start the job for a month, maybe more before actually moving to Spain, that way if it is a bad job, you can return relatively easy.

Due to the fall in construction in Spain, prices have fallen, around my area you can find very nice brand new duplex apartments in the Costa Blanca for about 500? a month for long stays, for example in my town Denia a lovely sea town, I have seen many apartments for rent at about 500? a month with communal swimming pool and walking distance from the sea, If you want more info I can post or Private Message you a few state agents links around the area.

But I would say yes, you can live in Spain on one salary, just adjust to a Spanish life style 😉

You can also live for free in Paris, LA, New York.

If you sleep on the streets, but we are answering a specific question about Barcelona.

Its not so easy to live in Barcelona if you don’t have family or bought yrs ago, arriving today and renting is expensive, you’ll be lucky to find a property safe and well maintained for less than 1,000 a month.

Do you just write for the sake of writing, this is person coming to Spain, And I’m giving advice, there are other regions of Spain where you can live for much less than Barcelona.

Anyways.

Apartment in Barcelona old town not to far from Pla?a Catalunya for 850? Month: http://www.yaencontre.com/vivienda/results.php/pisos-alquiler-barcelona-_ESP-476c6c5a4331413d

Apartment in Barcelona for 825? next to the Joan Mir? Fundation for 825? Month: http://www.yaencontre.com/vivienda/results.php/pisos-alquiler-barcelona-_ESP-476c6c5a43316b3d

It’s not a question of is there? but where is there?, google it for a few hours and find results, I’m sure you can find something decent in a good location and at a good price

what are the “better” areas to live?  I have twins, 2 yrs old and 2 dogs, so I need to be able to walk easily, not too hectic, a village feel, if that makes sense.  We are coming from Brooklyn the small city feel with parks and restaurants and grocery…thanks again

In my opinion keep to the coasts, the Mediterranean sea has very special charm that you will like allot, avoid big cities if you don’t like them and think of medium size towns around the big cities like Barcelona outskirts, Valencia, Alicante or even the south coast like Malaga, a bit more inland in the south is the beautiful city of Granada… usually medium size towns are very safe and welcome outsiders, and many more people talk English, personally I don’t like Madrid (I have nothing against the people, been there twice and definitely not appealing to me), do it has good connections if you are flying back and forth to Brooklyn.

And my recommendation is to put the kids in to a Spanish school, my parents did just that with me more than 20 years ago and I’m very grateful for it.
