My husband has been asked to take a promotion that would transfer him to the Barcelona office (2 year contract).  I will have to quite my job here in the US, sell our cars and we will have to rent our home.  He has worked there before for a five week stint in 2009 and 2008…we have both done extensive travel for our jobs, but living there is going to be completely new.  What are the need to knows?

He is the first to be transferred to this office from the US with a spouse…so we don’t have really anything to go on as far as spousal visas, etc.

His company is offering quite a bit of assistance for the move including; shipping personal items, our dog, furnishings (if we choose a unfurnished apt), language lesson, rental assistance, temporary housing for 1 month, 2 business class tickets a year back to US, private health insurance, management company assistance to maintain/rent out our US home, cultural training, storage for our goods in US, professional tax prep, visa/work permit prep, 1 months salary (for us to buy things there), gross up on taxes…I think that is it.  Note:  They are NOT paying for our housing and we DON’T have any children.

We have also been informed of the CRAZY taxes rates in Spain and taxes for pension/social services.  We are estimating after taxes, social services/pension tax we will take home 3800 euro per month…I beleive this is enough to live on?

Taking home 3800 euros a month in Barcelona is more than enough.  Your income will be much higher than the average Spaniard and you should be able to enjoy the life quite a bit here.  I would recommend starting to learn Spanish as soon as possible, and if you really want to impress the locals, start with Catalan as well.

One thing I would definitely recommend is NOT going to Telefonica for your telephone service. They are awful and the service (all in Spanish) is terrible too. Of course I am biased, but if you do your research you’ll see many people are less than happy with Telefonica!

As for the Spanish, I can highly recommend www.spanish4less.co.uk  they have excellent course for good value. I am learning very fast with their product and its very easy too.
