Hi
The paperwork and processing varies, and it all depends on both your nationalities and “residencias” in Spain. But in principle, you need to demonstrate in an office in your local “juzgados”  that you are legally married. So the best thing that you can do is go first to the “juzgados” and find out what papers they actually need from you. Then get those papers together and get it done. If anyone gets married in Spain, they are automatically given a “libro de familia”.

Hope that answers your Q.

I expect the usual reasons will apply. One of the main functions of the “libro” is proof of civil status and family relationships with children, along with the relevant dates. It is / was needed for many official processes, such as starting your kids at school.

However, having said that, let’s not forget that the “libro” is being phased out this year. All these personal details are being placed into electronic files, and so the authorities will have immediate access when necessary, without asking you to produce the “libro”. So, while making life a lot easier bureaucratically speaking, it could also make some peoples lives a nightmare if the details recorded are incorrect. I await with bated breath to see if the authorities manage to mess my life up (again) or not.

Thanks to Franco the book was introduced, now its another item to be placed in the bin.

Useless piece of rubbish as its hand written and easily falsified, go’s back to the good old days of paperwork and official doom.
