Heya people,

me and my girlfriend are moving to Barcelona in August from Croatia, she has got a job there and I will be a Phd student.

We are officialy an unmarried couple in Croatia (we have a notarized document stating that we satisfied croatian legal requirements) and we would like to obtain the same status in Barcelona. We are from non-EU country so that probably complicates situation a bit. As our Spanish and knowledge about spanish legal system is zero at the moment, we are having difficulties finding out how exactly to obtain that status as a foreigner. Finding info for a married couples is not that complicated but for unmarried it is a bit (at least to us).

Well, we need some help, especially if someone here has passed through the process 😊

The worst thing that could happen is not to bring some nonsense document from Croatia and we really wouldn’t like returning back just for them…

are you planning to apply for legal residency as family of a working resident?

I think not, my girlfriend will get working visa and i’m getting a student visa…i’m not sure what kind of residency status all this imply?

we didn’t insist on this matter in the embassy as we didn’ want to jeopardise our visa processes

your girlfriend will have to apply for the work/residence card once she enters spain.
you will have to apply for your student card once you enter spain.
she will be a working resident, you will be on a student permit.
so why do you want that your status as civilly united couple be recognized in spain?
you better learn spanish fast.
otherwise, there will be a lot of confusion on what to do,
and you will be dragging friends and acquantances around to translate for you.

well, my girlfriend would get a significant bonus on her salary, that’s why we are particularly interested, but it depends upon laws of spain, not of croatia where we have such status…

yes, I’m just starting to study spanish, we got ourselves few books and there are tons of material on the internet

now that you mentioned your girlfriend’s possible bonus, what exactly do you get as a civilly united couple in croatia that leads you to want to be recognized as a couple in spain?
