I would like to know what benefits if any would apply to an American citizen who is married to a Spaniard.

Hi Gaucin, I’m an American married to a Spaniard. I married my spouse in Spain, so we have a “Libro de Familia del Estado Espa?ol”, the legal document that attests to our status as a married couple. As the spouse of the Spanish citizen, one is eligible to apply for a “Tarjeta de familiar de ciudadano de la Uni?n” or Card for the relative of a citizen of the E.U.  This gives one the right to legal residence and the right to work. I just applied for my appointment to submit my paperwork, here in Barcelona, and i was given one for the following week.  Essentlially, you submit all the necessary documentation.  The form you need to fill is form Ex-16. You can download it from the website of the Interior ministry.  After you submit this, you are called for fingerprinting at the a Police Station designated for this.. and then you get the card… People report varying lengths of time in receiving the card.
