Hi all,

I just moved to Barcelona a few weeks ago to resume work with my US-based company that has an office here.  I already sorted out my residencia but am not so sure how to apply for a social security number. 

I was originally under the impression that your first employer does it for you, but they seem to be either unfamiliar with the process or not willing to apply for it on my behalf (long story).  Does anyone know what documents you need to bring to the Social Security office and what the process is like ?  Can?t start working without it, so am pretty anxious to get it sorted..

Social Security Number:
Your employer applies for this number when you start your first job in Spain.  This number then stays with you for all subsequent jobs.  If you are self-employed, you apply for this number yourself.

Thanks for the info - this is what I originally thought, but my company is being difficult.  Is there any way to apply for it in person if you?re not self employed?

Excellent, thank you.  Do you know if there is any specific paperwork one has to bring ?  I?m a non-EU citizen married to a Spaniard who is waiting on the tarjeta de residencia to be processed, so all I really have is the resguardo from the police with my NIE..

When my girlfriend applied for this number, she took her ID and “documento de empadronaiento”.(the proof that you are registred in your town/villag/city)
