Hi my wife and I are moving to Spain. We are both on prescribed medication from the Doctor, for Type two Diabetes and Thyroid.
Does anyone know if we can continue to get our pills from the health service or do we have to buy them from the pharmacia.

Thanks

Amos

Hi Amos,
I think as long as you are entitled to use the state health service here - then you should have no problem.
Otherwise, many many drugs are available over the counter that would otherwise be prescription only in the UK.  (Sadly I no longer have entitlement to state health care - but at least I can buy what I need - at a price!).

What do you have to do to qualify?

To qualify for a Sanitary card you either have to work legally and be putting money into Social Security through your job or you have to be an immediate family member of someone who does.

You have to apply for a Social Security card at your local office to work in Spain anyway and then this card is valid as a sanitary card.  To get your meds you must go to your doctor “medico de cabecera” explain what you need and have him or her write a prescription for you.  Then you take the prescription to the pharmacy and they give you a 60% discount.
