Hi

I’ve been reading about this topic and am a little confused.

To get our NIE you need to go to Police Station/Bank/Police Station OK with this

but is this your Residency OR is it a different process

NIE is not residency. However, the process is very similar.

You can just get your NIE, then later your residency. e.g. if you need an NIE to buy a car but were not yet resident.

Or you can wait until you are resident and get your residency which will include an NIE if you don’t already have one.

The NIE is the number that identifies you as a resident foreigner tax payer.
Since 2003 EU citizend do NOT need to get local identity card in the new EU Country where they decide to move. If you’re British you don’t need the tarjeta de residencia, you can use you British ... passport. In fact although identity cards are accepted as a legal document to leave or enter in Spain, banks require either the tarjeta de residencia or the original passport to open an account. And you’d better have your passport if you need to go to a Police station.
