My company has decided to expand operations to Europe.  I am a US citizen.  I am slated to get our Europe operations off the ground by relocating to Europe for 2 years.  Given the opportunity to choose where I live, I decided on Barcelona.  What visas and other permissions do I need and where do I start?  Thanks

Did you figure it out? I am in similar situation except that my wife is EU Citizen (Italian). I can be based of anywhere in the world as I do world wide sales and mainly visit customers for product presentations and sales world wide. I have chosen Barcelona to be based but now I am kind of worried about the visa as the Spanish consulate is useless.

Thank you,

Hi,

I would be happy to know any info you found out too. As I’m in a bit of a pickle about this! 😊

I’m moving to Barcelona in March. The company I work for here in the UK is a small firm (30 people) and I work in telesales. My boss has decided that he would like to keep me on, so are going to set me up with a laptop and phone line so I can contact the office back here in the UK and our databases etc.

I’m not sure what I have to do about tax. Originally I was going to leave my job in the UK and teach english in Spain so I was going to fill in the forms in the UK to stop paying tax in the UK and start in spain, but now I’ll be carrying on to work for my english company I don’t know what I have to do!

Will I continue to pay tax in england or do I have to declare my earnings to the Spanish tax office and pay tax in Spain?? Will I end up paying 2 lots of tax?

My partner will be working in Spain too, but for a spanish company… Would I be classed as working in Spain or working in England?

The company I work for is a small one and they do not have an office outside of the UK. I will still be getting paid into my english bank account (I don’t know if that makes any difference)

Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.

Kind Regards

Lindsey 😊

Hi,

I don?t know if this will be of any help for you, but the accountant at my work has found out that I will have to pay tax/national insurance in Spain, not England.

My employer has been advised to pay me each month via invoice? and me to either go self-employed or set up a Limited company. The reason that they have been advised this is because they would still have to pay national insurance in the UK for me, and it would save them this money.

The accountant in my office said that if I go self-employed and do anything wrong (miscalculate my self assessment tax return or anything like that.) then I would be solely liable and the government could take everything from me. As I don?t speak Spanish and would not want to make a mistake, obviously I would have to get an accountant in Spain to do my tax return and this would probably cost me some money.

If I were to set up a Limited company, then only my company (my personal Ltd Company not my current employer) would be liable, so there are some benefits.

Either way though I have to pay tax in Spain not England.

Hope this info is of some use to you.

Lindz 😊
