Hey All,

Me again.  How important is it to have health insurance prior to my arrival in Spain?  I have been in contact with a “Sanitas”(sp?) representative in Malaga and she said that with my orthopedic problems I more than likely wouldn’t qualify for Spanish Health Insurance.  Are there other companies to apply to?  I’ve looked online of course and “Healthcare International” seems to be the obvious choice but they are very expensive.

As always, any information anyone can provide is greatly appreciated.

Be well.

Just one damn thing after another…
Most European Health Insurance companies (and I suspect most US based companies) have exclusion clauses in their contracts which specifically exclude pre- exisiting medical conditions and associated problems which may result from the pre-existing condition.
Subject to the exclusion clauses, they may still provide some limited cover for a fee (of course!) but like all forms of insurance the companies will squirm like a fish on a hook looking for reasons not to pay out in the case of a claim…
Private Health Insurance is expensive enough to begin with… but I don’t suppose it’s all that different in New York.
Registration as self-employed (‘autonomo’) with the State run Health Service will cost you around 280? / 370$ a month and I believe there is a qualifying period, but that requires a different type of visa application from the US and I’m really not sure whether you would be eligible.

Need input from others in this matter…

You could try BUPA International.
They are very good.
