We recently planted 6 new saplings which we were given by a spanish neighbour, unfortunatly we do not know the type.

During the past week something has eaten all the way around the outer bark of the saplings about 6 inches of the ground.
Has anybody any idea what it might be or any ideas how to stop it happening again.
