Would it be safe (as in-would my passport be checked) to drive between Schenggen Countries to/from Spain if my tourist VISA has expired?  DO they check passports when driving between France and Spain, for example? 
I am the one with the 3 kids….

No there are no border checks when driving through Europe. The barriers, barbed wire and armed guards with mean dogs have gone!

I’m not so sure.  I’ve been pulled over and checked by the Guardia within a mile or two of the border when entering Spain on a tiny road through the Pyrenees.  This might have been an unusual random control, or it could have been connected with a short-term anti-terrorist exercise, but it certainly entailed showing passport and car documents.  I’m EU anyway so it didn’t bother me, but it clearly happens sometimes.

Yes you can be stopped anytime by the Guardia but the I understood the question to be is there always a passport check at the border and now there is not.

passport check are coming more comen again with both french and Spanish guards on the look out ,  flying and ports have been doing this sine last month Europe barriers are coming back but in forum off spot checked on the border
