We would love to take part in El Gordo de Navidad, if only because it takes up about 4 hours of Spanish TV, and is so much a part of the traditonal Spanish Christmas (not to mention the fact that we could win something .....  :lol: ... or maybe not ....).  But we are totally naive about the whole process!

I understand that you can buy un d?cimo for about 20 euros (or there abouts ...) and this is purchased from someone (a shop or other vendor) who has purchased un billete ..... but apart from that, I haven’t a clue either: the best place to purchase un d?cimo; or, how to cash it in if we actually managed to win something.

Last year we asked another ex-pat forum about this and the reply we got back was “go and buy a ticket”, which wasn’t that helpful ....

Any info on this?

I’ve never played either, but it does seem phenomenally complicated.  Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Christmas_Lottery.  You can buy on-line at elgordo.com but there seems to be a hefty premium.

I’ve had a look at the link and it looks a little complicated!
But it’s a consideration and I’ll have another look tomorrow ... the only thing is the shipping costs are a minimum of 17 euros, so maybe not.

What exactly is it that you need to know?  It really is as straightforward as buying a d?cimo.

You don?t have to buy your d?cimos on-line.  You can simply buy them from an ?administraci?n de loter?a?.

Many people seem very confused and try to complicate what is a very straight forward system!

You buy a ticket - from either the Government lottery shops or bars or other licensed sellers - hte El Gordo is 20 euros per ticket but other sellers may add a commission or a mark up to raise funds for a local cause. I paid 20 euros for a ticket in a lottery shop but 23 euros elsewhere.

The draw is next Saturday and will be on TV - If the numbers on your ticket are drawn you win - amount depends on which part of the draw it is (there are lots of prizes!) if they you lose! winning numbers published in the newspapers on Sunday.

If you are not sure go to a lottery shop and they run it through a machine which reads the bar code and tells you the result.

In terms of the prizes the Euro milliones is probably now the biggest payout especially on roll over weeks - its been up to 120 million Euros - tickets only available from a lottery shop because they have to come out of a machine.

With over ?3 billion in the pot theres a lot of money available for prizes… Well not exactly as like any good government the Spanish government takes 30% for themselves! This leaves “just” ?2.142 Billion for prizes.

A lot of money for prizes but then El gordo has a lot of prizes… 13,334 different prizes to be exact! Again a quick list is easier to explain than a narrative:

  * 1st Prize - ?3,000,000 per “serie” (?300,000 per “decima” applies to all)
  * 2nd Prize - ?1,000,000
  * 3rd Prize - ?500,000
  * TWO 4th Prizes - ?200,000
  * EIGHT 5th Prizes - ?50,000
  * 1,774 6th prizes of ?1,000

Thats the “Principal prizes” out of the way but there are also a whole host of secondary prizes on offer:

  * 2 x ?20,000 for the numbers either side of the 1st prize
  * 2 x ?12,500 for the numbers either side of the 2nd prize
  * 2 x ?9,600 for the numbers either side of the 2nd prize
  * 99 x ?1,000 for the numbers with the 1st three numbers that match the 1st prize
