Will I be allowed to re-enter Spain if I overstayed my tourist visa a year ago?

Hello,

I lived in Spain last year, applied for a visa and was rejected because they said I didn’t have a reason to be there.  What happened was my boss said I could apply for a visa once I got there and didn’t want to be connected to me if it turned out it didn’t work, and the school wouldn’t accept me without that stupid number.  So I just waited it out.  But there is a record that it was denied.  When I asked the policeman what would happen, he said ‘nothing’ but that I wouldn’t be able to re-enter for 3 years.  But the ‘3 years’ was never in writing and I can’t find this penalty anywhere else.

I just need to re-enter for a summer job and I will only be in Spain for a couple days before I go outside the EU.  I have a job, apartment, and a husband in the US.

Any ideas about the risks?
