Hi All,

Posted some questions on the moving to Spain forum, but figured I would also say hello here!

Thank you all for this fabulous resource. Really useful information. A bit about me:

I am a Canadian engaged to a Spanish citizen and we’re planning on moving to Spain after we get married this spring. Our planned destination is Barcelona, but we’re pretty flexible and looking around.

My biggest concern (having read some of the horror stories on this site) is the bureaucratic hurdles necessary for me to be able to get my residency and eventual citizenship.

But it will all be worth it to be able to bask in the warm sun and soak up the lovely culture!

So a big HOLA to all and thanks again for this very useful site.

Mike

Hi Mike. I too am Canadian. I am currently waiting for my work permit to arrive from Spain. I will be working for a company in Malaga. However, I lived in San Sabastian in the basque country for 4 years so I will not be new to Spain. Just new to the south. Of course Im currently in canada as spanish law requires you to be while a work permit is being processed. Im getting very anxious as there is a wait time involved. But I am looking forward to returning to Spain. Life was great there and I look forward to staying there and eventually getting permanent residence.

I saw your question on the other topic page. You say you are going to get married here in Canada…as opposed to Spain. I think one thing you want to do before you get married, is clarify if it might not be better to get married to your spanish girlfriend in Spain as this is where you want to settle. That fact that you were married in Spain might make things a little easier for you when it comes time to immerse yourself into the beauracratic mess that can be Spain. Not sure if it will make a difference but it occurred to me that it might.

Life for a Canadian in Spain is pretty good I think. Since there seems to be such a small number there, people tend to find it quite odd when they meet you but at the same time interesting. I was often mistaken for, and I dont know why, a frenchman or a german (oddly never an englishman as that is where my roots are). Most spanish seem to have a very good impression of Canada though.

Where in Canada do you live?
