Hi,
I’m more or less in your situation. I already married my spouse and I went through the first round of paperwork. I submitted the Soliticitud para Tarjeta de Familiar de Ciudadano de la Uni?n (or EX17) at Extranjer?? in Barcelona after duly obtaining an appointment. I had to wait only 7 days to obtain my appointment. My appointment was on Mar. 4th. On April 4th, I am to go the Police Department authorised to fingerprint me and submit the necessary fees in order to get the card (which comes along with the NIE). When I get it, I’ll post on here..
After reading the experiences of others in the same situation, it seems that it can take up to 6-8 months.
BTW, do not waste 400 Euros on a lawyer because the process is quite straightforward. If your partner speaks Spanish, he or she can go to Extranjer?a and ask them what is needed. The staff there, in my opinion, was very friendly and helpful.

Hello,
I know there are a lot of questions about this but none of them quite match my situation…
I’m Australian and my partner Spanish. We’ve submitted all our papers to get married and are just waiting to find out the date. I arrived on a tourist visa which has now run out but I was told by an immigration lawyer that I am “in a sort of limbo” because we have started the marriage process (i.e. I should be OK as long as I don’t travel).
My questions are, once we are married how do I get the residencia/NIE and how long does it all take? (We are in Barcelona). The lawyer has quoted us a fee of around 400Euros to do the paper work for us and we also don’t know if this is reasonable?? Basically, I am trying to get an idea of how long it will be before I can work and before I can travel freely.
If anyone has any experience with this we’d really appreciate your advice.
Thanks
