We were lucky enough to win quite a large amount on the Lottery on our recent holiday in Spain 😊  We wanted to put the winnings in a avings account for future use.  We were told that we would need a NIE for NON RESIDENTS to open such an account.
The very helpful manager in the CAM sent us off to the main tax office in Alicante. It was HEAVING and the queue just to ask a question was about 30 meters long! We were eventually told we were in the wrong department, and to go over the road to the Sub Delegacion de Hacienda.  This we did, and after another long wait in a queue,  yet again we were told we were in the wrong department 😠  I asked again WHERE we should go, (I do speak fluent Spanish) we were sent to the AVENIDA DE APARICIO the other end of the city grrrrrrrrrh There we had the pleasure ,NOT of speaking to one of the most rude individuals ever!  He also told us we were in the wrong biulding, and if we were to return to that office, to get there by 9am.

My question, PLEA is, WHERE on EARTH are we supposed to go?  We returned to the bank and the manager telephoned various departments to try and get the correct information for us…..... told them what a dreadful impression their offices were giving to foreigners!  She was also given the run around being told several different things. We had to return to the UK without achieving anything, but hopefully when we return in a few weeks time, HOPEFULLY we will know EXACTLY what we have to have and WHERE to go.
We would be SO grateful if anyone could give us the correct information. I repeat, this is just to open a bank account and savings account as NON residents in Alicante SPAIN
THANK YOU

Can a non EU person on holiday in Spain win the lottery ?

I thought under the terms you had to be either a resident or EU to claim the winnings.

Though I`m no expert.

Where is the money now ?

Did they pay into your account in your home country ?

If so, why if your only a torist would you want a Spanish savings account ?

Wouldn`t you want it in the country you live in ?

Have you paid your chunk to the tax man in Spain ?

You need to go here - the Officina for Extranjeros (The Tax office does NOT issue NIEs)

when you get there again make sure that you are in the right Q

C/ Campo de Mirra, 6
03005 - Alicante
(Alicante)
Tel.: 965125531
(Horario: De lunes a viernes de 9.00 a 14.00)

with your completed EX-14 application forms, passports and photocopies, photos and the modelo 790 to prove payment of admin fee.

At one time you could open a non residents account without an NIE number but perhaps that has changed.

Well done on you win! As non residents (not non EU) you are entitled to win

Robi, Thank you so much for your helpful information 😊 . Could you tell me where I can get the Ex-14 application forms from, and the modelo 790.

In reply to the first poster, no I have not “paid my chunk to the Spanish tax man” tax as far as I know is payable only on the interest, and I can choose if I pay tax to the UK government OR the Spanish government.

As to why I want it in Spain, not that it is any of your business!  but we will be going to live there hopefully in about 12 months time

Sorry didn`t mean to upset you, just thought it strange that a tourist who won the lottery wants to open a savings account in the country they don`t live in.

Isn`t the interest rate higher in the UK.

Hi Gatita,

You can download the NIE form here:

N.I.E. (EX14) / RESIDENCIA (EX16)

Application Forms and the
Regulations Governing EU citizens in Spain document.

http://extranjeros.mtas.es/

For forms - Click: Modelos de Solictudes

Or direct link
http://extranjeros.mtas.es/es/general/procedimientos_Solicitudes_index.html

For the Regulations document (from Home page)
Click UK flag & R?gimen de los ciudadanos Comunitarios en Espa?a

The modelo 790 is not online because it is a carbonated multi part set type form you will have to get it from the NIE office - go to the bank and pay the fee around 10? whilst they are processing your NIE.

I am still not convinced that a Non resident needs one to open an account but if you are coming to Spain anyway you might as well get it.

First of all: congrats!!!

You actually DO NOT need a NIE to open an account..they told me i couldn’t open one without NIE, but keep insiting and by law you can open an account withiut NIE

If you do not live here, you can also apply for your NIE at the spanish embassy near you in your homecountry(takes 4 tot 8 weeks to receive it)

Yes agreed..but…....

This from SOLBANK:

Regarding your query, a non-resident can open a bank account without NIE number by now. If a non-resident wish to open an investment account, some of them will be compulsory to have NIE (stock market accounts, shares and some others?).

Horses for courses!

Another question fro little old sceptic me :coolhmm:

Isn`t the rules for the Spanish lottery that you need to have an account in the country that the ticket was one in, apart from the Euro Lotto which is unique to all EU countries ?

Arn`t you liable for tax on income from the win ?

If so leaving it undeclared in a Spanish savings account may be a bit suspect.

Robi Thank you yet again for your very helpful post, it is much appreciated.

Santi…..... If you cannot offer any constructive advice, I think it would be better to keep quiet.  All you seem able to do is fire a barrage of questions at me, obviously believing I have some kind of ulterior motive for posting on here, or that I ma trying to hide something from the tax man. You are a sad individual if that is the case.

Touchy.

Which isn`t helping me think your genuine.

The authorities are used to people trying to hide cash around the ever widening EU community and some not very bright individuals try to cheat the system.

This NIE story seems to be a never ending story.  The more you read about it, the less clear it gets.
I need a NIE as a bought a villa in Spain (only a NIE as it’s a holiday home).  I have to get this NIE before the signing of the Title Deed.
Some people say you can get the NIE document the same day, some say only the next day, ...

Who can tell me for sure how long it takes and answer my questions?
- I had planned to go to the Officina for Extranjeros in Alicante on Friday (around 7am), as I have to go to the notary for the signing of my title deed on Monday.  Would this work out, or do I have to plan this on Thursday?
- There is also spoken about a payment form 709, how does that work, where do you get that, where do you have to pay that, ...?
- All information about the procedure is very very welcome !!!
