Buenos d?as amigos y amigas,
I am a 30 year old Irish guy who is considering a permanent move to Madrid in just over a year’s time.My girlfriend is from there and we are currently in the process of deciding to make the move to the heat or stay cold and wet in Dublin…
I just discovered this site recently and have read through a lot of posts. Mine is not very different to most others but i wanted to start a dialogue with anyone who can offer some useful advice for this big decision.
My girlfriend is quite enthusiastic about the idea, so i’m the one that really needs some peace of mind. 😊
My Spanish is quite good. I can have full conversations, one on one, but as a lot of you will know things get a bit hazy when there are 8 people all talking at once… I have been taking lessons for a while now to iron out my grammatical errors and i have no doubt that i would be completely fluent after spending over a year there.
Regarding work, she would be able to get a job with the same company she works for now over there and i would be looking for something in I.T. I already have a TEFL certificate from a couple of years ago that i have not made any use of yet so at least i could do something with that if i had problems getting an I.T. job straight away.
I like a lot of things about Spanish culture including obviously the food, the weather and the people. Also Madrid in particular is attractive because of all the ameneties it has. Shame there’s no beach but you can’t have everything i suppose.
The big thing for us is that we plan on having a family within the next few years and we believe Madrid would
be a better place to raise them than Dublin. We plan to live near the mountains and commute.
A big concern for her is that i don’t regret leaving the emerald isle.
What i’m looking for are some opinions from people who have taken a similar plunge into Madrid.
Particularly people from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, as we have very similar cultures, to alay
any concerns i may have and try to get a clearer picture of what is before us.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Muchas gracias,
Hasta luego!
