A friend of mine is American and lives in the USA. He has asked me a couple of questions and I’m thinking somebody here could help out with the answers?

whether an American (like me) can move there and buy/build a house or if you have to be part of the EU to own property there.

He is a photographer, musician and website designer so I’m thinking he might want to remain self employed? Any advice would be great.

So long as he has the money   and does NOT nead a loan ... no problems at all. He’ll only have to open an account at a local bank so that all bills are duly paid at the due time. He’ll also need:

in case he buys a property
seek good legal advice to make sure he knows exactly what he’s signing ... Spaniards can be rather “naughty” ...  😖

in case he buys a piece of land to build his own house
it would be advisable he got both legal advice AND a Notary Public checking at the Catastro Urbano that the land is NOT only for agricultural use and therefore he’d be entitled to get the licence to build his house. Furthermore he’d check what local rules and regulations are applied in the area he chooses
