I am a British citizen married to a New Zealander. We were married in Australia. We have been living in Spain (Cadiz province) for many years and my husband has had several residence permits.
He is having problems renewing his residence permit this time because he has been told that our Australian marriage certificate is not recognized in Spain. We have been told that we have to have our marriage registered in the UK. However this is not possible under UK law. The Spanish authorities do not understand this because the law here states that all overseas marriages involving a Spanish national must be registered in Spain. We have been in contact with the British Consulate in Malaga who says there are other people in a similar situation and the British Consul is discussing the matter with the Spanish authorities in Madrid, but at the moment there is no solution. In the meantime my husband has been informed by the authorities in Cadiz that he has to provide proof of a registered marriage in the UK within 10 working days.
Is anyone else in the same situation or does anyone have any information regarding this topic this topic.

I dont have direct experience of this problem but I think because you have lived here for many years you have accrued rights - I suggest you download and research the documents here;

http://extranjeros.mtin.es/es/InformacionInteres/FolletosInformativos/index.html

many of which are in English - see the Regulations Governing EU Citizens in Spain which also covers Non EU (!)
