Hi everyone in Spain,

I’ve just registered today and would like to introduce myself and seek some advice.  I am a young teacher (Head of Geography) in a secondary school in London.  I thoroughly love teaching and the pupils, however my boyfriend lives in Spain, outside Girona.  I’m thinking of teaching in Spain at some stage, however I think my only option is English schools in Spain that work with the English examination boards for geography or teaching English, and with my Irish accent that may prove difficult?! hee hee!  Has anyone any advice on where to start looking asides from google search engines? I’ve came across http://www.saintgeorgeschool.es/ and http://www.nabss.org and some others but cannot clearly see any current vacancies.  If I were to teach English would I need to do a TEFL or CELTA course (May sound like a very stupid question?).

I studied Spanish at school but through lack of practice and encouragement of my boyfriends now perfect English, I’m probably intermediate and I understand the region encourages Catalan to be spoken- but one step at a time!

Each academic holiday I am out and this summer instead of slouching about and annoying him It would be great to get some experience on what teaching is like out there, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Muchas Gracias

Hi FMC

The situation in International schools isn’t great at present, as their clients are expats a lot of whom are suffering financially and either quitting to go home or else taking kids out of private education for the time being, therefore a lot of schools aren’t hiring.  But I am sure it would still be worth approaching schools that interested you directly, tell them you are visiting and would love to arrange a meeting etc - you wouldnt need anything beyond your teaching qualifications I’m sure, and if you can get to know people you will be in the right place when vacancies do arise.  I am learning day by day here how much contacts matter, and you have nothing to lose by saying hello to the right institutions,

Good luck!
