If you are thinking of voluntarily exchanging your driving licence to a Spanish one you might wish to consider waiting until the end of the year because the Spanish are falling into the EU line by issuing DLs for 10 years and not the current 5 years. (Up to age 65)

If however your licence is about to expire anyway then you will need to renew now as driving without a valid licence is a hanging offence.

By the way the Spanish DL makes a useful form of ID following the demise of the good old Residencia Card.

Darn it, we changed ours just last month!

One word of warning when you do change.  We received a phone call from the Trafico in Cadiz to say that our new licences were ready for collection, but when we went to get them we were given a “provisional” licence valid for three months and told that the proper cards would be sent through the post.  These provisional licences are not valid outside of Spain so you can?t hire a car in the UK for example.  If this is an issue for you, take another photo with you when you go and insist on being given a proper photo ID licence.  These can be printed off on pink card while you wait.

The good news is that the plastic cards arrived about 2 weeks later.
