I have an appointment for a NIE application next week and I’m still unsure of what documents I need. The information I have found online is contradictory and confusing; I have read about form EX14, form EX16, modelo 790 or some combination thereof. Also some mention you have to bring four passport size photographs, others two, and others don’t mention this at all. Are there official instructions anywhere ? In case it makes a difference, I’m a EU citizen.

Documents aside, I’m also anxious about the appointment; my spanish is at early beginner level and I doubt I can pull it off alone if the clerk doesn’t speak english at all (which is quite common from what I read). I’m relatively new to Madrid and I’m not really close to any locals I can ask to come with me. Has anyone been in a similar situation and if so what did you do ?

Ex-14 is the one for NIE only.

EX-16 is for Residencia and NIE or Residencia only if you already have an NIE.

790 is the multi copy form that you get from the Police Station, fill in, use to pay fee at a bank and take receipt copy to your appointment. You need to get this form and pay fee before your appointment.

No photos are required for NIE or Residencia for EU citizens.

You will need (up to) 2 copies of your passport.

Great advice from shaggy man but I would have some photos in my pocket, just in case - different regions seem to have different policies on photos.

Forms available from here by the way

I went today and I was given EX-16 and 790 to fill in, so apparently EX-14 is not needed. Thank you both for the information!

Thats right as per earlier post EX14 is if you want NIE only which a non resident would. The book I mentioned explains everything and gives examples of filling the forms out
